16 claims: 2 independent, 14 dependent

  1. 1
A composite coating providing highly erosion and abrasion wear resistance characteristics to a substrate coated therewith, said composite coating comprising - an intermediate layer of tungsten having a thickness of at least 2 µm;and - an outer layer of a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide, with said tungsten carbide comprising W₂C, W₃C or a mixture of both, wherein the ratio of the thickness of the tungsten intermediate layer to the thickness of the outer layer is at least above 0.30.
  2. 5
A composite coating according to any of the claims 1 to 4 wherein said intermediate layer has a columnar grain structure.
  3. 6
A composite coating according to any of the claims 1 to 5 wherein said outer layer has a fine-grained, non-columnar and lamellar structure.
  4. 7
A composite coating according to any of the claims 1 to 6 wherein said outer layer is crack free.
  5. 8
A composite coating according to any of the claims 1 to 7 further comprising a primary layer on the opposite side of said tungsten intermediate layer from said outer layer, said primary layer being comprised of an inert metal selected from the group comprised of cobalt, rhodium, iridium, nickel, palladium, platinum, copper, silver, gold, alloys thereof and mixtures thereof.
  6. 10
A method for producing a highly erosion and abrasion wear resistant composite coating on a substrate, said method comprising - chemical vapor depositing on said substrate an intermediate layer of tungsten having a thickness of at least 2 µm;and - chemical vapor depositing on said intermediate layer an outer layer of a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide, with said tungsten carbide comprising W₂C, W₃C or a mixture of both, wherein the ratio of the thickness of the tungsten intermediate layer to the thickness of the outer layer is at least above 0.30.
  7. 14
A method according to any of the claims 10 to 13 wherein a primary layer is deposited on the substrate prior to deposition of the intermediate layer, said primary layer being comprised of an inert metal selected from the group comprised of cobalt, rhodium, iridium, nickel, palladium, platinum, copper, silver, gold, alloys thereof and mixtures thereof.
  8. 16
The highly erosion and abrasion wear resistant composite coating according to any of the claims 1 to 9 coated on a substrate for use as compressor blades for gas turbines and jet engines.
