Automated transaction system using microprocessor cards

Abstract

An automated transaction system employs microprocessor-bearing user cards each issued to a respective user for maintainig a history of user account transactions and a user account balance, microprocessor-bearing master cards issued to vendors for maintaining a history of master account transactions and a master account balance, and terminals in which a user card and a master card are inserted for performing account transfer transactions wherein value from the account balance of one card is debited and the account balance of the other card is correspondingly credited. A transaction history recorder is used to produce or record the transaction history stored in the card for the user of the vendor. In the preferred embodiment, each master card is assigned to a respective terminal of a vendor and maintains a history of the transactions executed at that terminal between the master card and user cards presented for transactions at the terminal.

  1. 1
An automated transaction system comprising:(a) a user card (10) having a user card microprocessor (60) mounted therein for maintaining a user account balance, said user card (10) having data output means connected to said microprocessor (60);(b) a master card (160) having a master card microprocessor (162) mounted therein for maintaining a master accounted balance and for transferring an account value amount to the user account balance of an authorized user card (10), said master card (160) having data output means connected to said microprocessor, (c) a refilling terminal having first receiving means (161,163) for receiving said user card (10) inserted therein and establishing a connection with said user card data output means, second receiving means (171, 173) for receiving said master card (160) inserted therein and establishing a connection with said master card data output means;(d) first path means formed in said refilling terminal for establishing a data communication path between said user card microprocessor (60) inserted in said first receiving means and said master card microprocessor (162) inserted in said second receiving means of said refilling terminal, such that said master card microprocessor (162) communicates with said user card microprocessor (60) to authorize the transfer of an account value amountto the user account balance of the user card (10) and correspondingly to update said master account balance maintained by said master card microprocessor (162);characterized by (e) a supervisor card (170) having a supervisor card microprocessor (172) mounted therein and data output means connected to said microprocessor (172);(f) third receiving means (174,175) for receiving said supervisor card (170) inserted therein and establishing a connection with said supervisor card data output means;and (g) second path means formed in said refiling terminal for establishing a data communication path between said master card microprocessor (162) inserted in said second receiving means (171, 173) and said supervisor card microprocessor (172) inserted in said third receiving means (174, 175) of said refiling terminal, such that said supervisor card microprocessor (172) communicates with said master card microprocessor (162) to authorize said master card (160) to execute an account value transfer to the user account balance of a user card (10).
  2. 11
An automated transaction system comprising:(a) a user-carried, portable first unit (10) having first semiconductor means mounted therein for maintaining a user transaction account, said first unit having data output means (12,13) connected to said semiconductor means;(b) a transaction terminal (20) having first receiving means for establishing a connection with said data output means of said first unit, and operating means including a second microprocessor (30) for performing a set of terminal operations;(c) a value dispensing section (40) connected with said transaction terminal (20) for dispensing an item of value;characterized by (d) a first microprocessor (60) included in said first semiconductor means;(e) a second unit being the dispensing section and having a dedicated third microprocessor (41) securely incorporated therein for performing a value transfer operation separately from performance by said transaction terminal of said set of terminal operations;wherein said user card microprocessor (60) and said third microprocessor (41) of said dispensing section (40) having security program means respectively incorporated therein for executing a handshake procedure between said microprocessors (60, 41) and preventing said value dispensing section (40) from dispensing and item of value until said handshake procedure has been completed;and (f) path means in said transaction terminal (20) for establishing a data communication path between said first microprocessor (60) of said first unit (10) and said third microprocessor (41) of said second unit such that said first microprocessor (60) communicates with said third microprocessor (41) to authorize the performance of the value transfer transaction by said second unit and corresponding to update said transaction account maintained by said first microprocessor (60) of said first unit.
