Automated transaction system with modular printhead having print authentication feature

Abstract

A B S T R A C T A transaction terminal has input means for inputting arequest for printing a value indicia on an article, printingmeans for printing the requested value indicia on the article, and operating means for operating said terminal to enable a userto input the request for value indicia through the input meansand to enable the printing means to print the requested valueindicia on the article. In an improved printing means for thetransaction terminal, the printing means is formed as a separatesection in the terminal and has a printhead and a dedicatedmicroprocessor for controlling the printhead contained therein. First ink supply means are provided for supplying a visible inkto the printhead. Second ink supply means are provided forsupplying an invisible, machine-readable ink to the printhead. The printhead microprocessor has interface means connected tothe operating means of the terminal for receiving the valueindicia request input to the terminal, and print program meansfor controlling the printhead to print the requested valueindicia as a visible indicia with visible ink from the first inksupply means on the article, for deriving an authentication codewhich uniquely corresponds to the requested value indicia, andfor controlling the printhead to print the authentication codeas an invisible indicia with invisible ink from the second inksupply means on said article. The printed visible value indiciacan be subsequently verified as authentic by machine reading ofthe invisible authentication code and comparing theauthentication code for correspondence to the value indicia.
