  1. 1
    1) In a method for manufacturing a caramel-containing cellulosic article by the alkali cellulose, xanthate, viscose, and acid-salt bath regeneration procedure:the improvement comprising mixing caramel with the viscose solution to form caramel-containing viscose;and contacting said caramel-containing viscose with an acid-salt bath to regenerate the cellulose and immobilize the caramel in the cellulose without chemical bonding in a uniformly distributed form through the article mass and across the article surface so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam.
  2. 2
    2) In a method for manufacturing a caramel-containing cellulosic casing by the alkali cellulose, xanthate, viscose, extrusion and acid- salt bath regeneration procedure:the improvement comprising mixing caramel with the viscose solution to form caramel-containing viscose;extruding the caramel-containing viscose into a tube and contacting same with an acid-salt bath to regenerate the cellulose and immobilize the caramel in the cellulose without chemical bonding in a uniformly distributed form through the tube wall and across the tube surface so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam.
  3. 8
    8) A method for manufacturing a caramel-containing cellulosic article comprising:a) steeping cellulose starting material in an aqueous alkaline solution to form alkali cellulose;b) mixing the alkali cellulose and carbon disulphide to form cellulose xanthate;c) dispersing said cellulose xanthate in an aqueous alkaline solution to form viscose, and aging the as-formed viscose;d) mixing caramel with said viscose during step d) to form aged caramel-containing viscose;ande) contacting said aged caramel-containing viscose with an acid-salt bath to regenerate the cellulose, immobilize the caramel without chemical bonding in a uniformly distributed form through the article mass and across the article surface so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam.
  4. 9
    9) A method for manufacturing caramel-containing cellulosic casing comprising:a) steeping cellulose starting material in an aqueous alkaline solution to form alkali cellulose;b) mixing the alkali cellulose and carbon disulphide to form cellulose xanthate;c) dispersing said cellulose xanthate in an aqueous alkaline solution to form viscose, and aging the as-formed viscose;d) mixing caramel with said viscose during step c) to form aged caramel-containing viscose;e) and extruding the aged caramel-containing viscose into a tube and contacting same with acid-salt bath to regenerate the cellulose and immobilize the caramel without chemical bonding in a uniformly distributed form through the tube wall and across the tube surface so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam.
  5. 10
    10) A caramel-containing cellulosic article wherein the caramel is uniformly distributed through the article wall and across the article surface, and immobilized without chemical bonding in the cellulose so as to be substantially nonextrac- table in water and steam and impart a uniform nongranular caramel appearance throughout said article.
  6. 11
    11) A caramel-containing cellulosic casing wherein the caramel is uniformly distributed through the casing wall and across the casing surface, and immobilized without chemical bonding in the cellulose so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam and impart a uniform nongranular color appearance throughout said casing.
  7. 12
    12) A caramel-containing wood-derived liquid smoke impregnated cellulosic article wherein the caramel is uniformly distributed through the article mass and across the article surface in immobilized relation with the cellulose without chemical bonding so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam and impart a uniform nongranular dark brown appearance to said article, the liquid smoke being impregnated in at least one surface of said article and transferable through the immobilized caramel-containing cellulosic article mass to color and flavor absorbable material contiguously associated with a second surface of said article and without simultaneous transfer of said caramel to said absorbable material.
  8. 15
    15) A caramel-containing wood-derived liquid smoke impregnated cellulosic casing wherein the caramel is uniformly distributed through the casing wall and across the casing surface in immobilized relation with the cellulose without chemical bonding so as to be substantially nonextractable in water and steam and impart a uniform nongranular dark brown appearance to said casing, the liquid smoke being transferable through the immobilized caramel-containing cellulosic casing wall to color and flavor absorbable material contiguously associated with the inner wall of said casing and without simultaneous transfer of said caramel to said absorbable material.
