EP0244984A2

Automatically-guided vehicle having load clamp.

Abstract

An automatically-guided, driverless vehicle (l0) for handling loads (22) has a selectively openable and closeable load clamp (l2). The clamp (l2) is equipped with various sensors (66, 74, 88, 72, 80, 82, 84, 90) for automatically sensing the load (22) and other objects and surfaces surrounding the load, and for controlling the movement of the clamp (l2) along a load-engaging direction, the vertical reciprocation of the clamp, and the opening and the closing of the clamp in response thereto.

14 claims: 10 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
In a vehicle for handling a load having a bottom surface and a top surface, a load clamp comprising a pair of transversely openable and closeable arms extending forwardly from said vehicle in a load-engaging direction, said arms including respective clamp pad means for selectively releasably engaging said load, and lift means on said vehicle for selectively raising and lowering said arms with respect to said vehicle, characterized by load sensor means on said load clamp for sensing the vertical elevation of at least one of said surfaces of said load relative to said arms.
  2. 2
The apparatus of claim l wherein said load sensor means includes means for sensing the top surface of said load as said arms are lowered relative to said load.
  3. 4
The apparatus of claim l wherein said load sensor means includes means for sensing whether or not the bottom surface of said load is below a predetermined elevation relative to said arms.
  4. 7
The apparatus of claim l, further including bottom sensor means for sensing the presence or absence of an object beneath and transversely between said clamp pad means.
  5. 9
The apparatus of claim l, further including respective sensor means mounted on said arms, transversely movable relative to each other in unison with said arms, for sensing the presence of an object below, and transversely outside the area between, said clamp pad means.
  6. 10
l0. The apparatus of claim l, further including sensor means on said arms for sensing the presence of a surface below said clamp pad means and sensing whether said surface is substantially level in a transverse direction relative to said arms.
  7. 11
The apparatus of claim l, further including sensor means on said arms for sensing the presence of a surface below said clamp pad means and sensing whether said surface is substantially level in said load-engaging direction.
  8. 12
The apparatus of any one of claims l-ll wherein said load sensor means includes an electro-optical sensor.
  9. 13
The apparatus of claim l2 wherein said electro-optical sensor includes means for transmitting light between said arms in a direction substantially transverse to said load-engaging direction.
  10. 14
A vehicle having a selectively openable and closable load clamp for handling loads characterized in that the clamp is equipped substantially as herein disclosed with sensing means     for the load and/or other objects and/or surfaces surrounding the load     and/or for controlling one or more of the following:(a) the movement of the clamp along a load-engaging direction;(b) the vertical reciprocation of the clamp;(c) the opening and closing of the clamp.
