  1. 1
An optical fiber connector for connecting two optical fibers (25) along a connector axis (64), comprising:- a coupling (22,100,119,120) with - a housing (57,102,119,120) having a threaded portion (59,110,138) at each of its opposed ends and - sleeve means (66,112) for receiving a plug in one end thereof and a second plug in the other end thereof, with a mating inner surface adapted to engage a conformable mating outer surface of each plug, wherein said sleeve means are disposed within said housing and aligned with the connector axis, - a plug assembly (23) including - a plug (24) terminating an optical fiber (25), - a cap (46) being rotationally supported on said plug (24) and having a threaded portion (54) for cooperating with one of said threaded portions of said housing (59), and - key means (43) mounted on said plug (24) and adapted to prevent unintended relative motion between plug and housing when said cap is screwed onto the threaded portion of the housing;- a second plug assembly terminating an optical fiber and being adapted to be plugged into the other end of the housing;characterized in that - the key means (43) are rotatably movably mounted on the plug so as to allow to select the rotational position of the key means (43) with respect to the location of the fibre fixed in the plug and that said key means project toward an end of the plug parallel to the connector axis;and in that - said sleeve means (66, 112) has at least one end portion (67) enclosed in said housing and that said end portion is provided with a notch (86) adapted to be engaged by said projecting key means (43).
  2. 4
The connector according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein said plug (24) of each plug assembly includes a truncated conically shaped end portion (30) and a cylindrical portion (26) connected thereto, said truncated conically shaped portion (30) extending beyond said cap (46), said cylindrical portion (26) having a compression spring (44) disposed thereabout to bias said plug (24) into said sleeve means (66) with each end of said spring (44) engaging a washer (45,47) which is disposed about said plug (24) and wherein a retaining ring (42) is disposed about said cylindrically shaped portion (26) adjacent to said truncated conically shaped portion (30) and in engagement with the adjacent-to washer (45), and wherein an annular member (42,45) is disposed about each said plug and includes said key means (43) which extends in a direction along the longitudinal axis of said plug (24) toward the small diameter end portion thereof.
  3. 7
The connector according to any of claims 4 to 6, wherein said housing (57) includes cavities (58;107) in opposed ends thereof, each of said cavities (58;107) being adapted to receive the truncated conically shaped end portion (30) of one said plugs (24), further each of said cavities (58;107) being defined by a wall including a threaded portion (59;110;138) which is recessed (86;111;139) from an entrance portion (106) of said each cavity (58).
  4. 8
The connector according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein said optical fibers have centroids (170;173) which may be disposed out of the plug axis (175) and wherein said notches (86) on said sleeve means (66) are aligned and said key means (43) are made radially aligned with the core centroids (170,173).
  5. 9
The connector according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein said optical fibers have centroids (170,173) which may be disposed out of the plug axis (175) and wherein said notches (86) on said sleeve means (66) are arranged on different sides and opposing and each said key means (43) is disposed 9o° from its core controid.
