EP0243003A2

Sterilization method and apparatus therefor.

Abstract

A hydrogen peroxide gas maintained at a temperature which is higher than its lowest condensing temperature is introduced to a surface of an article to be sterilized, the hydrogen peroxide gas is condensed on the surface of the object maintained at a temperature below the condensing temperature to sterilize the object, and thereafter the hydrogen peroxide is removed by applying hot air.

  1. 1
A method for sterilizing the surfaces of articles by the use of hydrogen peroxide characterised in that said method comprises the steps of (a) introducing a hydrogen peroxide gas, maintained at a temperature higher than its lowest condensing temperature, to the surface of an article;(b) condensing said hydrogen peroxide gas on the surface of said article, said surface being maintained at a temperature below the condensing temperature of said hydrogen peroxide gas, to effect sterilization;and(c) applying hot air to said surface to remove the condensed hydrogen peroxide.
  2. 2
A method for sterilizing surfaces of articles wherein a hydrogen peroxide liquid is dropped in the form of liquid droplets each having a size which permits said hydrogen peroxide liquid to be gasified substantially instantaneously and to be dropped onto an evaporation surface of a heater heated to a temperature above 130°C at which the decomposition of said hydrogen peroxide during gasification is minimized and the dropped hydrogen peroxide liquid is gasified at said evaporation surface, a hydrogen peroxide gas thus generated is admitted by transport air heated to a temperature which is substantially equal to or higher than the temperature of said evaporation surface to a surface of an article to be sterilized through a guide pipe heated to a temperature which is substantially equal to or higher than the temperature of said evaporation surface, said hydrogen peroxide gas is condensed at said surface of the object maintained at a temperature which is lower than the condensing temperature of said hydrogen peroxide gas so as to sterilize said article, and thereafter said hydrogen peroxide is removed by hot air.
  3. 4
A method as claimed in either of claims 2 and 3 wherein said liquid droplets have a diameter of 1 to 3 mm.
  4. 5
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 further comprising the step of radiating ultraviolet rays from above the surface of said condensed hydrogen peroxide, onto the surface of said article to be sterilized after the condensation of said hydrogen peroxide gas and before removal of said condensed hydrogen peroxide, to effect further sterilization.
  5. 6
A sterilization apparatus for a method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, comprising feeder means for feeding a constant amount of hydrogen peroxide liquid, means for gasifying the hydrogen peroxide liquid fed from said feeder means by heating, transport air supply means for supplying air which transports a hydrogen peroxide gas generated by said gasifying means, and guide means for admitting said hydrogen peroxide gas to a surface of an article to be sterilized while maintaining said hydrogen peroxide gas at its evaporation temperature.
  6. 9
A sterilization apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein said transport air supply means comprises an air supply pipe having a portion, internal of said chamber, which is formed with air supply holes opened to said chamber and an external extension in which a heater is inserted.
