Inspection of header tube holes.

Abstract

Apparatus for scanning header tube holes includes a probe assembly (30) designed to engage the surface of a header encircling a header tube hole. The probe assembly includes a spring mounted sensor (31, 32) which is preferably an eddy current probe. A mechanism (40) is provided for supporting and positioning the probe assembly (30). The mechanism (40) is provided with resilient rings (43, 47) which, in operation, engage the tube stub. A drive device (50) is provided for imparting axial and circumferential movement to the probe (31, 32) relative to the surface of the hole which is to be inspected.

  1. 1
Apparatus for scanning a surface (14) encircling a portion of a header tube hole (22) of a header (20) having a tube stub (24) seated within the hole, the apparatus comprising:a probe assembly (30) capable of being inserted into the hole (22) and including a sensor (31, 32) and spring means (33-36) for resiliently urging the sensor into engagement with the surface (14) to be scanned;a tube stub mounting mechanism (40) capable of being inserted into the tube stub (24), the mechanism (40) including a central hollow cylinder (42) connected to the spring means (33-36), the spring means (33-36) being movable responsive to movement of the hollow cylinder (42), a tube (41) slidably disposed on the hollow cylinder (42), a pair of expansible rings (43, 47) on the tube (41), and expanding means on the tube (41) for expanding the rings (43, 47) into engagement with the tube stub (24);and drive means (60) for rotating the cylinder (42) and the sensor (31, 32) therewith, and means (64) for axially translating the cylinder (42) and the sensor (31, 32) therewith.
  2. 7
Apparatus according any one of the preceding claims, wherein the expanding means includes a flange (25) rigidly mounted on the tube (41) on one side of one (43) of the expansible rings (43, 47), a rigid sleeve (45) intermediate the expansible rings (43, 47) and an adjustable knob (49) on one side of the other (47) of the expansible rings, the adjustable knob (49) being threadably engaged to the tube (41) for longitudinal movement on the tube towards the expansible rings (43, 47) whereby the expansible rings are expanded responsive to pressure exerted by the sleeve (45) and the flange (25) and by the sleeve (45) and the adjusting knob (49).
  3. 8
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the sensor (31, 32) comprises an eddy current probe.
  4. 9
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the hollow cylinder (42) is flexible.
  5. 10
A method of eddy current scanning a surface (14) encircling a portion of a header tube hole (22) having a tube stub (24) seated within the hole, the method comprising:inserting into the portion of the header tube hole (22) a probe assembly (30) including an eddy current probe (31, 32), an elongated central support bar (36), a support plate (35) mounted on the support bar (36), a spring bar (33, 34) having a first end attached to the support bar (36) and a second end for resiliently urging the eddy current probe (31, 32) into engagement with the surface (14) to be scanned;engaging the tube stub (24) with a tube stub mounting mechanism (40) operatively connected to the probe assembly (30) for supporting the probe assembly (30) in a fixed alignment with the portion of the hole (22) to be inspected, the tube stub mounting mechanism (40) including a cylinder (42) connected to the eddy current probe (31, 32) for axial and rotational movement therewith;moving the cylinder (42) and, therewith, the probe (31, 32) relative to the surface (14) to be scanned;and detecting electrical signals from the probe (31, 32).
