12 claims: 7 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A composite structure comprising:(a) a polytetrafluoroethylene fibril matrix, and (b) 0.005 to 15 parts of viable cells per part of PTFE by weight immobilized in said matrix, said viable cells being capable of their usual and continuous biochemical and biological performances.
  2. 4
A composite structure according to any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein said viable cells are admixed with inert diluent particles.
  3. 5
A composite structure according to any of Claims 1 to 4 where said viable cells are animal, bacterial, fungal or yeast cells.
  4. 6
A composite structure according to any of Claims 1 to 4 wherein said viable cells are Achromobacter guttatus, Azotobacter aqilis, Candida tropicalis, Clostridium butyricum, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus denitrificans, Pseudomonas mephitica var. lipolytica, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Streptococcus faecalis, Tetrahymena pyriformis, Aspergillus niger, or mammalian cells.
  5. 7
A composite structure according to any of Claims 1 to 6 wherein said structure is a sheet material having a thickness in the range of 0.1 to 10 mm.
  6. 8
A method of preparing a composite structure comprising the steps of:a) blending viable cells with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particulate in an aqueous dispersion to form a damp paste, b) adding sufficient lubricant water to exceed the absorptive capacity of the viable cells yet maintain a putty-like consistency, c) intensively mixing the resulting putty-like mass to fibrillate said PTFE particulate, d) biaxially calendering the resultant mass between heated calendering rolls to cause further fibrillation of said PTFE particulate to provide a composite sheet, and e) optionally, drying said composite sheet.
  7. 12
A method according to any of Claims 8 to 11 wherein said putty-like mass is mixed at a temperature in the range of 5 to 70°C and said calendering rolls are maintained at a temperature in the range of 30 to 40°C.
