Buffer circuit.

Abstract

57 An integrated circuit unity gain buffer amplifier suitable for low voltage operation in which the input signal is applied to the base of a common emitter NPN transistor first stage (Q1). The collector of the first stage is connected to the base of an emitter follower NPN transistor second stage (Q2). The emitter of the second stage is connected to the base of an emitter follower PNP transistor third stage (Q3). The collector of the first stage is loaded by a constant current source (4) and its emitter is connected through a resistance (R1) to ground. The collector and emitter of the second and third stages respectively are connected together through a resistor (R3) to the supply voltage (Vcc). The emitter of the second stage is connected through a resistance (R2) to ground. The collector of the third stage is connected both to the output terminal (6) and to the emitter of the firs! stage. This allows the circuit to operate at a very low supply voltage without any transistor operating in practical saturation.

  1. 1
A buffer circuit for operation at low supply voltages, comprising:first and second transistors (Q1,Q3) of opposite conductivity types, first and second terminal means for connection to a source of supply voltage, input signal terminal means (2) connected to the base of the first transistor (Q1), the emitter of which is connected through a first resistance means (Rl) to the first terminal means, and current source means (4) connected between the collector of the first transistor (Q1) and the second terminal means (Vcc) for loading the first transistor, the collector of the second transistor (Q3) being connected to output terminal means (6) and also to the emitter of the first transistor (Q1), and the emitter of the second transistor (Q3) being coupled to the second terminal means (Vcc), so that an input signal applied at the input signal terminal (2) will cause a corresponding signal at said output terminal means (6), characterised in that the circuit is adapted for operation at a low supply voltage by the provision of a third transistor (Q2) of the same conductivity type as the first transistor (Q1), whose base is connected to the collector of the first transistor (Ql), whose emitter is connected to the base of the second transistor (Q3) and connected through second resistance means (R2) to the first terminal means, and whose collector is coupled to the second terminal means (Vcc), the emitter of the second transistor (Q3) being coupled to the second terminal means (Vcc) by way of a third resistance means (R3).
  2. 6
A circuit according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein said first and third transistors (Q1,Q2) are PNP transistors and said second transistor (Q3) is an NPN transistor.
