Heat sterilizable storage solution for red blood cells and blood bags containing it.

Abstract

Aqueous storage solution for red blood cells comprising a stabilized ascorbate derivative and having a pH sufficient to maintain substantially all of the initial concentration of ascorbate derivative and avoid formation of ascorbate degradation products during heat sterilization. A preferred solution includes at least about 90% of the presterilization ascorbate and adenine but is free of dextrose.

10 claims: 6 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
Use of a heat sterilizable aqueous solution comprising a stabilized ascorbate derivative having a pH of greater than 8,0 for storage of red blood cells.
  2. 4
A multiple blood bag system comprising a donor bag for receiving blood from a donor and a satellite blood bag connected via tubing to the donor bag, characterized in that the satellite bag contains an aqueous solution of a stabilized ascorbate derivative having a pH of greater than 8.0.
  3. 7
A multiple blood bag system according to any of claims 4 to 6, characterized in that the solution is substantially free of a sugar.
  4. 8
A multiple blood bag system according to any of claims 4 to 7, characterized in that the stabilized ascorbate derivative is an ascorbate phosphate, preferably ascorbate-2-phosphate, ascorbate-3-phosphate or ascorbate-2,2'-phosphate.
  5. 9
A multiple blood bag system according to any of claims 4 to 8, characterized in that the solution includes adenine.
  6. 10
A heat sterilizable combination comprising a plastic blood bag containing an aqueous solution of a stabilized ascorbate derivative having a pH of greater than 8.0.
