Combustion gas-powered fastener driving tool.

Abstract

An efficient, portable, easy to operate fastener applying tool (410) is disclosed that is powered by the gases produced from the internal combustion of a fuel and air mixture. A supply of liquified gas stored under pressure in a cylinder (424) provides the source of power. A piston (430) connected to a fastener driver (420) is slidably mounted within a cylinder (429) to move reciprocally downwardly and upwardly through a driving and a return stroke. A combustion chamber (439) is formed at the upper end of the cylinder. A spark plug (463) powered by a piezo-electric firing device (477), is located within the combustion chamber (439). The combustion chamber (439) features a set of fan blades (432) driven by an electric motor which is continuously in operation when the tool is in use. A main valve mechanism (434) actuated by a set of lifting rods (460) which are moved upwardly and downwardly when the tool is moved toward and away from the workpiece, is used to control the flow of fresh air through the combustion chamber (439). When the combustion chamber (439) is isolated from the atmosphere and the fuel and air are thoroughly mixed, the spark plug (463) is fired to explode the fuel and air mixture and force the piston (430) through its driving stroke. A bumper is located at the lower end of the cylinder (429) to keep the piston (430) from striking the bottom of the cylinder. Combustion gases are discharged from the cylinder at the end of the driving stroke which aids in producing a thermal vacuum within the combustion chamber. Air supplied to the lower face of the piston from the atmosphere forces the piston through its return stroke. A unique trigger interlock mechanism (476, 480) is provided to insure that the tool cannot be operated until the combustion chamber (439) is closed and the combustion chamber cannot be reopened after ignition until the trigger (476) is released.

  1. 1
A portable fastener driving tool (410) comprising a housing (411), a main cylinder (429) in said housing (411), a piston (430) in said main cylinder (429) and movable from a driving to a driven position, a driver (420) attached to said piston (430), a magazine (416) for supplying fasteners (417) into position to be driven by said driver (420), a combustion chamber (439) formed within said housing (411) and having said piston (430) as one wall thereof, a fan (432) in said combustion chamber (439) and controls (475, 482) therefor to operate same to cause turbulence in said chamber (439), a valve means (434) controlling the flow of gases into and out of said combustion chamber (439), a work sensitive probe assembly (450) secured to said valve means (434) whereby the combustion chamber 439) is not closed off until the tool (410) is in position to drive a fastener (417) into a workpiece, means (424,426,464) for providing fuel into said combustion chamber (439) and igniting same (463) for driving said piston (430) to drive a fastener, the improvement characterized in that trigger operated cam means (476,480) responsive to the movement of said valve means (434) whereby the tool cannot be fired until the combustion chamber (439) is closed and the chamber cannot be opened until the trigger (476) is released, and means (442) for facilitating the return of said piston to its driving position after the tool has been fired.
  2. 2
A portable fastener driving tool as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the valve means (434) include a slidable cylinder (437), and in which the trigger operated cam means (480) include a trigger rod (490) secured to said slidable cylinder (437), a movably mounted cam member (492) disposed adjacent said trigger rod (490) and a trigger (476) connected to said camnember. (492), said rod (490) being positioned to block the movement of said cam member (492) and thereby said trigger (476) when the slidable cylinder (437) is open to permit the flow of air into said combustion chamber (439) and when the slidable cylinder (437) is closed by engagement of the work cylinder probe assembly (450) with a workpiece the cam (480) may be moved and the trigger (476) operated to fire the tool, said cam being constructed to retain the trigger rod (490) and slidable cylinder (437) in the closed position until the trigger is released to facilitate the return of the piston (430) to its driving position.
  3. 3
A portable fastener driving tool as set forth in claim 2, characterized in that one end of the cam member (492) is pivotably (496) connected to said housing and the other end is connected to said trigger through a lost motion connection (494,498), said cam member (492) is constructed and mounted whereby when the trigger (476) is free to move, the cam (480) pivoted into blocking arrangement with said trigger rod to prevent movement until the trigger is released.
  4. 4
A tool as set forth in claim 2, characterized in that the work sensitive probe assembly (450) includes a spring biased member (452) that extends beyond the outlet of the fastener to be driven and includes a plurality of rod members (460) secured to said slidable cylinder (437), and the trigger rod (490) has a U-shaped configuration secured to said slidable cylinder, which U-shaped rod prevents pivotal movement of said cam member (492) and thus operation of said trigger (476) until engagement of the spring biased member (452) with the workpiece moves the slidable cylinder (437) into sealing engagement with the housing (411) to close off the combustion chamber (439).
  5. 5
A portable fastener driving tool as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the main cylinder (429) defines a plurality of continuously open openings (442) adjacent the bottom thereof, whereby the air disposed below the piston (430) during the driving action will be evacuated until the piston passes said openings, the portion of the cylinder (429) below said openings, said piston (430) and the closed bottom of the cylinder (429) providing a sealed compression chamber, whereby the air below the bottom (430) and said openings (442) is compressed to form an air bumper to prevent the piston (430) from contacting the housing adjacent the bottom of the cylinder (429) and thereafter along with the air that flows into said cylinder (429) through said openings (442) serves to return the piston to the driving position.
