    A peripheral unit controller in a data processing system comprising:a processor (101) adapted to generate and transmit a plurality of peripheral orders (command words) to the peripheral unit controller (100) which consists of two subprocessors (100b and 100d);and a transmission means (102) interconnecting the processor (101) and said peripheral unit controller (100);characterized in that the peripheral unit controller comprises: a first subprocessor (100-b) connected to said transmission means;and a first timer circuit (100-a) connected to the first subprocessor (100-b);the first timer circuit being responsive to a first timer start signal generates a first timer completion signal for a first predetermined period of time after occurrence of the first start control signal;the first subprocessor having a halt state and being responsive to a first one of the peripheral orders received on the transmission means generates the first timer start signal and enters its halt state, and being responsive to the first timer completion signal while in its halt state transmits a first acknowledge message via the transmission means to the processor;and a second subprocessor (100-d) connected to said transmission means and to the first timer circuit;the second subprocessor having a halt state and being responsive to a second one of the peripheral orders received on said transmission means enters its halt state, and responsive to the first timer completion signal while in its halt state starts synchronized operation with the first subprocessor and transmits a second acknowledge message via said transmission means to the processor, whereby transmission of the first and the second acknowledge messages are indicative of synchronous operation of the subprocessors.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 1 characterized in that the peripheral unit controller further comprises:a second timer circuit (100-c) connected to the second subprocessor (100-d);the second timer circuit being responsive to a second timer start signal generates a second timer completion signal a second predetermined period of time, greater than the first predetermined period of time, after occurrence of the second timer start signal;and the second subprocessor further responsive to the second one of the peripheral orders generates the second timer start signal, and responsive to the second timer completion signal in the absence of the first timer completion signal while in its halt state to transmit a third acknowledge message to the processor via said transmission means, indicative of nonsynchronization of operation of the subprocessors.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 1 wherein the processor (101) is further adapted to generate and transmit an initialization peripheral order to the peripheral unit controller via the transmission means before transmitting the first one and the second one of the peripheral orders characterized in that the first subprocessor comprises:first microprocessor arrangement (300, 301, 302,304) having a halt state and being responsive to the initialization peripheral order to apply a timer initialization signal to the first timer circuit and enter its halt state;a second microprocessor arrangement (307, 308, 309, 311) having a halt state and being responsive to the initialization order to enter its halt state;and means (319) for detecting synchronous operation of the first and the second microprocessor arrangements and for generating a synchronization signal;the first timer circuit being responsive to the timer initialization signal generates an initial timer completion signal a predetermined period of time after receipt of the timer initialization signal;the first and the second microprocessor arrangements each being responsive to the initial timer completion signal while in the halt state to initiate synchronous operation;and the first microprocessor arrangement being further responsive to the initial timer completion signal transmits to the processor via said transmission means an acknowledge message indicative of synchronous operation of the microprocessor arrangements.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 1 characterized in that the first subprocessor comprises:a first microprocessor arrangement (300, 301, 302, 304) adapted to generate subtimer control signals;and a second microprocessor arrangement (307, 308, 309, 311) adapted to generate subtimer control signals;the first timer circuit of the first subprocessor comprises: a first subtimer (303) connected to said first microprocessor arrangement and having a first output terminal connected to the first and said second microprocessor arrangements and responsive to said first timer start signal generates the first timer completion signal on the first output terminal and having a second output terminal connected to the first microprocessor arrangement, the first subtimer being responsive to subtimer control signals from the first microprocessor arrangement generates timer completion signals on the second output terminal;and the first timer circuit further comprising a second subtimer (310) having an output terminal connected to the second microprocessor arrangement and responsive to subtimer control signals from the second microprocessor arrangement generates timer completion signals on the output terminal of the second subtimer.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 1 characterized in that the first and the second subprocessor each comprise:a microcomputer (200, 204);associated memory arrangement (201, 205);and a memory bus means (214, 215) interconnecting each microcomputer and its associated memory arrangement;each of the microcomputers being adapted to generate memory read signals and to execute functions defined by data words stored in the associated memory arrangement;and the memory arrangements each being responsive to the memory read signals from the associated microcomputer to transmit data words representing the functions to the associated microcomputer;the peripheral unit controller further comprising interconnecting means (220) interconnecting the memory arrangement of the first subprocessor and the memory arrangement of the second subprocessor;the memory arrangement of the first subprocessor being responsive to a certain one of the peripheral orders to store one of the data words defined by said certain peripheral order and to generate an address select signal and to transmit the address select signal to the memory arrangement of the second subprocessor on the interconnecting means;and the memory arrangement of the second subprocessor being responsive to the select signal to store the data word defined by the certain peripheral order.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 6 characterized in that the memory arrangements each comprise:a storage means (532);and apparatus (519, 520, 521, 522, 523) for accessing the storage means in accordance with a first-in/ first-out method and decode means (501, 502, 516, 517, 518);and the memory arrangement of the second subprocessor further comprises a control flip-flop (505) having first and second stable states and the memory arrangement being responsive to the address select signal to store the data word in the storage means when the flip-flop is in its first stable state.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 1 characterized in that the first subprocessor comprises:a bistable means (506) having a first and a second stable state;and a first clock oscillator means (801) for generating a first oscillator output signal (clock--0);the second subprocessor comprising a second oscillator means (801) for generating a second oscillator output signal (clock-1);and the first subprocessor further comprises means (802, 803, 804) connected to the first and the second oscillator means and the means responsive to the first oscillator output signal generates a first clock signal in accordance with the first oscillator output signal when the bistable means is in the first stable state or only the first oscillator output signal is present, and responsive to second oscillator output signal generates the first clock signal in accordance with the second oscillator output signal when the bistable means is in the second stable state or only the second oscillator output signal is present.

    A peripheral unit controller in accordance with claim 8 characterized in that the first subprocessor comprises:a second means (901, 902, 903) connected to the first and the second clock oscillator means (801) and responsive to the first oscillator output signal generates a second clock signal in accordance with the first oscillator output signal when the bistable means is in the first stable state or only the first oscillator output signal is present, and responsive to the second oscillator output signal generates the second clock signal in accordance with the second oscillator output signal when the bistable means is in the second stable state or only the second oscillator output signal is present.
