Disinfecting caps and systems and associated methods

Abstract

Caps can be used to cover and disinfect a male protrusion portion of a medical connector. Some caps can create a seal with the male protrusion to prevent antiseptic from entering a lumen of the protrusion. A biasing element can aid in creating or maintaining the seal.

  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A cap configured to disinfect a medical connector comprising:a housing comprising a connection interface, wherein the cap is configured to be removably coupled to a medical connector, the housing further comprising a sidewall that at least partially defines a chamber, wherein the sidewall defines an open end configured to receive the medical connector into the chamber;a pad disposed within the chamber and configured to be compressed by the medical connector when the medical connector is inserted into the chamber;and an antiseptic within the pad, wherein the pad is configured to release antiseptic when compressed;wherein the pad is configured to rub, scrub, or swab a distal end of the medical connector when the medical connector rotationally engages the pad, and wherein the housing is configured to form an interrupted seal with an outer surface of the medical connector when the medical connector is inserted into the chamber, wherein said interrupted seal allows the antiseptic released from the pad to enter a space between the sidewall and the outer surface.
  2. 3
The cap of claims 1 or 2, wherein the medical connector comprises a male luer. Date Reçue/Date Received 2020-12-29
  3. 4
The cap of any one of claims 1-3, wherein the male luer comprises edges defining an open end, wherein the antiseptic pad is configured to deform around the edges when compressed by the male luer.
  4. 5
The cap of claims 1 or 2, wherein the medical connector comprises a female luer.
  5. 8
A cap configured to disinfect a medical connector that comprises a male luer, the cap comprising:a housing comprising a connection interface at an exterior surface, wherein the cap is configured to be removably coupled to a medical connector, the housing comprising a sidewall that at least partially defines a chamber, wherein the sidewall defines an open end configured to receive the male luer into the chamber, and wherein the housing further comprises one or more Date Reçue/Date Received 2020-12-29 vents that are configured to provide an interrupted seal between the housing and an outer surface of the male luer when the male luer is inserted into the chamber;a pad positioned in the chamber and configured to be compressed by the male luer of the medical connector when the male luer is inserted into the chamber;and an antiseptic within the pad, wherein the pad is configured to release antiseptic when compressed;and wherein the pad is configured to rub, scrub, or swab a distal end of the male luer when the male luer rotationally engages the pad.
  6. 10
The cap of claims 8 or 9, wherein the pad is in a rotationally fixed position within the housing when the male luer rotationally engages the pad.
  7. 11
The cap of any one of claims 8-10, wherein the connection interface is configured to rotate the cap relative to the male luer when the male luer is inserted into the chamber.
  8. 12
A cap configured to disinfect a medical connector that comprises a female luer, the cap comprising:a housing comprising a connection interface at an interior surface wherein the cap is configured to be removably coupled to a medical connector, the housing comprising a sidewall Date Reçue/Date Received 2020-12-29 that at least partially defines a chamber, wherein the sidewall defines an open end configured to receive the female luer into the chamber;a pad disposed in the chamber so as to be compressed by the female luer of the medical connector when the female luer is inserted into the chamber;and an antiseptic within the pad, wherein the pad is configured to release antiseptic when compressed;wherein the pad is configured to rub, scrub, or swab a distal end of the female luer when the female luer rotationally engages the pad, and wherein the housing is configured to form an interrupted seal with an outer surface of the medical connector when the medical connector is inserted into the chamber that allows the antiseptic released from the pad to enter a space between the sidewall and the outer surface.
  9. 14
The cap of claims 12 or 13, wherein the pad is in a rotationally fixed position within the chamber when the female luer rotationally engages the pad. Date Reçue/Date Received 2020-12-29
  10. 15
The cap of any one of claims 12-14, wherein the connection interface is configured to rotate the cap relative to the female luer when the female luer is inserted into the chamber.
  11. 16
A method of disinfecting a medical connector comprising:obtaining a cap comprising: a sidewall that at least partially defines a chamber;a pad disposed within the chamber;and an antiseptic within the pad;coupling the cap to a medical connector;compressing the pad with the medical connector, wherein at least a portion of the antiseptic is released from the pad;and rotating the medical connector against the pad, such that the pad rubs, scrubs, or swabs a distal end of the medical connector, wherein coupling the cap to the medical connector forms an interrupted seal between the sidewall and an outer surface of the medical connector such that a portion of the antiseptic released from the pad enters a space between the sidewall and the outer surface.
  12. 18
The method of claims 16 or 17, wherein the pad is rotationally fixed in position within the chamber. $6 Date Reçue/Date Received 2020-12-29
  13. 20
The method of any one of claims 16—19, wherein the medical connector comprises a male luer.
  14. 21
The method of any one of claims 16-19, wherein the medical connector comprises a female luer.
  15. 29
The cap of any one of claims 2-4 and 7, wherein the housing comprises one or more vents configured to provide the interrupted seal.
  16. 30
The cap of any one of claims 5-7, wherein the pad comprises an end having an extension protruding therefrom into the space between the sidewall and the outer surface of the medical connector.
  17. 32
The cap of any one of claims 12-15, wherein the pad comprises an end having an extension protruding therefrom into the space between the sidewall and the outer surface of the female luer.
  18. 33
The cap of any one of claims 13-15, wherein a portion of the internal threads at least partially defines the space between the sidewall and the outer surface of the female luer.
