Abstract

A system and method for providing land mobile radio (LMR) content (130) using a cellular data network (26) is provided. The method includes communicating the LMR content (130) via at least one of an LMR network (24) and a cellular data network (26). The method further includes encapsulating the LMR content (130) using a packet switching protocol when communicating the LMR content via the cellular data network (26).

    A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising using a multilayer protocol stack (60) for communicating the LMR content (130).

    A method in accordance with claim 2 wherein the two layer protocol stack (60) comprises an LMR application layer (62) and an LMR transport layer (64).

    A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising automatically determining (104) whether to the communicate the LMR content (130) via the LMR network (24) or the cellular data network (26).

    A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the packet switching protocol comprises an Internet Protocol (IP).

    A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the cellular data network comprises at least one of a public carrier network and a private network.

    A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the encapsulating is performed before communicating the LMR content via the cellular data network (26).

    A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising performing end-to-end encryption between a plurality of LMR units (22).

    A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising performing end-to-end digital encoding between a plurality of LMR units (22).

    A wireless communication system in accordance with claim 10 further comprising a plurality of cellular data network communication coverage areas (206) configured to provide communication via the cellular data network (26) and a plurality of LMR network communication coverage areas (208) configured to provide communication via the LMR network (24).

    A wireless communication system in accordance with claim 10 wherein the packet switched infrastructure (41) is configured to communicate the LMR content (130) using a multi-layer protocol stack (60).

    A wireless communication system in accordance with claim 10 wherein the LMR content (130) is configured for communication using one of a Project 25 (TIA 102) and ETSI TETRA airlink protocol.

    A wireless communication system in accordance with claim 10 wherein the LMR content (130) is configured for communication using one of an OpenSky M/A-COM proprietary format, a NetworkFirst and an EDACS system proprietary format.

    A wireless communication system in accordance with claim 10 wherein the LMR content (130) is configured for communication using one of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO), Universal Mobile Telephone Service (UMTS) and 802.10 system standard.

    A wireless communication system in accordance with claim 10 wherein the LMR content and the LMR network (24) are configured based on different airlink protocols.

    A digital signal included in a carrier wave comprising:a land mobile radio (LMR) data portion (136);and a packet switching protocol encapsulation portion (132).

    A digital signal included in a carrier wave in accordance with claim 18 wherein the packet switching protocol encapsulation portion (132) is configured to be communicated using a multi-layer protocol stack (60) having an LMR application layer (62) and an LMR transport layer (64).

    A digital signal included in a carrier wave in accordance with claim 18 wherein the packet switching protocol encapsulation portion (132) is configured to be communicated using a cellular data network (26).
