Magical wand and interactive play experience

Abstract

The invention provides a unique interactive play experience carried out utilizing a toy "wand" (100) and/or other actuation/tracking device (321, 325). In one embodiment the wand (100) incorporates a wireless transmitter (150) and motion-sensitive circuitry (115) adapted to actuate the transmitter in response to particular learned wand motions. The wand allows play participants to electronically and "magically" interact with their surrounding play environment simply by pointing, touching and/or using their wands (100) in a particular manner to achieve desired goals or produce desired effects (376, 377, 378). Various wireless receivers or actuators (362) are distributed throughout the play facility to support such wireless interaction and to facilitate full immersion in a fantasy experience in which participants can enjoy the realistic illusion of practicing, performing and mastering "real" magic.

CA 02520126 2009-08-17 THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSION PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:1. A motion-activated toy for facilitating wireless interactive game play, said motion-activated toy comprising: a generally elongated body having distal and proximal portions;a wireless transmitter disposed on or within said generally elongated body, said wireless transmitter comprising a radio frequency, infrared and/or RFID transmitter, wherein said wireless transmitter is capable of sending: a plurality of different command signals for triggering one or more visual, mechanical and/or audio effects remotely located from said motion-activated toy, and user tracking information for identifying said motion-activated toy or an individual play participant using said motion-activated toy;and actuation circuitry operatively associated with said elongated body and that causes one of said plurality of different command signals to be wirelessly sent by said wireless transmitter in response to a particular motion of said elongated body, said actuation circuitry further comprising a first sensor located toward the distal portion of said elongated body and a second sensor located toward the proximal portion of said elongated body.
