Apparatus and method for detecting features of fingerprint

Abstract

The detection of fingerprint feature is performedon the basis of a directional distribution of fingerprintobtained by setting a plurality of points on a circlehaving a center corresponding to a mark point on adirectional pattern of ridges, obtaining inner productsof vectors indicating tangent lines and vectorsindicating ridges at the respective points and providinga distribution of the inner products as a directionaldistribution of ridges, in the following manner. Thatis, as the first method, Fourier expansion means Fourier-expands the directional distribution of ridges and outputs Fourier coefficient every frequency component, powercalculation means calculates power of every frequencycomponent on the basis of the Fourier coefficients andpower determination means detects the fingerprint featureon the basis of the power of every frequency components. As a second method, smoothing means divides the directionaldistribution of ridges into a plurality of partialdistributions and smooths the respective partialdistributions and zero cross detection means detectsthe number of changes of value of the plurality of thesmoothed partial distributions from positive to negativeor negative to positive as the number of zero crossingsand detects the fingerprint feature on the basis of thenumber of zero crossings.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:1. A fingerprint feature detecting apparatus comprising: first means for setting a plurality of points on the circumference of a circle having a center at a point on a directional pattern of ridges of a fingerprint, and obtaining inner products each being the inner product of a vector along the tangent line of the circle at one of said plurality of points and a vector along the ridge at said one point;and second means for detecting a fingerprint feature on the basis of the ridge direction distribution consisting of variations in the inner products.
  2. 2
A fingerprint feature detecting apparatus comprising:first means for setting a plurality of points on the circumference of a circle having a center at a point on a directional pattern of ridges of a fingerprint, deriving a vector along the tangent line of the circle at each of said plurality of points from a table storing preliminary calculated vectors along the tangent lines of the circle, and obtaining inner products, each of which is the inner product of the derived vector and a vector along the ridge at each of said plurality of points;and 66446-638 second means for detecting a fingerprint feature on the basis of the ridge direction distribution consisting of variations in the inner products.
  3. 9
A fingerprint feature detecting method comprising:a first step of setting a plurality of points on a circle having a center corresponding to a mark point on a directional pattern of ridges, obtaining inner products of vectors indicating tangent lines and vectors indicating ridges at the 66446-638 respective points and outputting a distribution of the inner products as a ridge direction distribution;and a second step of detecting the fingerprint feature on the basis of the ridge direction distribution.
  4. 10
A fingerprint feature detecting method comprising:a first step of setting a plurality of points on a circle having a center corresponding to a mark point on a directional pattern of ridges, deriving vectors indicative of tangent lines from a table storing preliminarily calculated vectors indicative of tangent lines at the respective points, obtaining inner products of the vectors indicating tangent lines and vectors indicating ridges at the respective points and outputting a distribution of the inner products as a ridge direction distribution;and a second step of detecting the fingerprint feature on the basis of the ridge direction distribution.
