Abstract

Methods and apparatus ace disclosed for inputting messages and other information, such as advertisements, to a vehicle (1) while thevehicle is coupled to a local station (50), such as a recharging station or a refueling station. The messages can be selected in accordancewith information received from the vehicle, including information that selectively identifies one, same, or all of: a) a characteristic ofan occupant of the vehicle (e.g., name, account number, address, etc.); b) a characteristic of the vehicle (e.g., make, model, year, class,registration number, marker number, odometer reading, owner, etc.); c) a destination of the vehicle (entered leading through a data entryconsole (1d) and optionally stored within a vehicle memory (1b)); and (d) any other characteristic of interest.

A method for selecting at least one message for receipt by an occupant of a vehicle, comprising the steps of: coupling the vehicle to a means for dispensing a consumable energy source;transferring information from the vehicle into the dispensing means;receiving the transferred information at the dispensing means ;and at the dispensing means, selecting, in accordance with the received information, at least one message to be input into the vehicle from the dispensing means for storage in a memory of the vehicle.

    A system for selecting a message to be provided to a vehicle, comprising:CA 02163200 2004-01-30 means for outputting a message to a vehicle;means for coupling the vehicle to the means for outputting means for transferring indicia from a memory within the vehicle to the outputting means;means for receiving the transferred indicia;and means for selecting, in co-operation with the received indicia, at least one message to be input into the vehicle through the means for outputting, wherein the means for selecting includes means for choosing the at least one message from a plurality of messages in accordance with a received indicia that selectively identifies at least one of a characteristic of an occupant of the vehicle, a characteristic of the vehicle, and a destination of the vehicle.

    A system for providing a message to a vehicle, comprising :a local station that includes means for bidirectionally coupling to a vehicle for transferring information including messages between said local station and a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said location station;CA 02163200 2004-01-30 message storage means for storing a plurality of messages;and message selection means having an input coupled to said local station for receiving information that is transferred from a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, said message selection means being further coupled to said message storage means for choosing at least one message from said plurality of messages in accordance with received information that selectively identifies at least one of a characteristic of an occupant of a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, a characteristic of a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, and a destination of a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, said message selection means further including an output coupled to said local station for outputting the selected message thereto for inputting to the vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station.

    A vehicle, aid vehicle comprising a memory device for storing data;and means, responsive to said vehicle being coupled to a means for inputting a consumable energy source to said vehicle, for bidirectionally coupling said memory device to a means, located external to said vehicle, for inputting data to and/or for receiving data from said memory device.

    A method for providing a message to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising the steps of:storing an electronic message within a memory of a computer, the electronic message comprising information for identifying an intended recipient of the electronic message, the computer being bidirectionally coupled to a data communications network;coupling a vehicle to a dispenser of a vehicular energy source, the dispenser being bidirectionally coupled to the data communications network;transferring information to the computer using the dispenser and the data communications network, the transferred information comprising a portion that contains an identification of an occupant of the vehicle;in response to the portion of the transferred information matching the information of a stored one of the electronic messages that identifies the intended recipient of the electronic message, retrieving the stored one of the electronic messages and transmitting the retrieved electronic message from the computer towards the dispenser over the data communications network;receiving the electronic message;and CA 02163200 2004-01-30 presenting the received electronic message to the occupant of the vehicle.

    A system for providing a message to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising:a first computer comprising a memory for storing an electronic message, the electronic message comprising information for identifying an intended recipient of the electronic message, said first computer being bidirectionally coupled to a data communications network;a second computer that comprises a portion of a vehicle fuel dispenser, said second computer being bidirectionally coupled to said data communications network and also bidirectionally coupled to a fuel dispenser data interface;and a third computer that comprises a portion of a vehicle, said third computer being bidirectionally coupled to a vehicle data interface that is adapted for being bidirectionally coupled to said fuel dispenser data interface;wherein said second computer and said third computer operate together for transferring information to said first computer through said vehicle data interface, said fuel dispenser data interface and said data communications network, the transferred information comprising a portion that contains information for identifying an occupant of said vehicle;and wherein said first computer is responsive to a condition wherein said portion of the transferred information, that identifies the occupant of said vehicle, matches the information of CA 02163200 2004-01-30 a stored one of said electronic messages, that identifies the intended recipient of the electronic message, for retrieving said stored one of said electronic messages and for transmitting the retrieved electronic message towards said fuel dispenser over said data communications network for presentation to the occupant of said vehicle.

    A method for providing a stock market quotation to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising the steps of:activating a user interface within the vehicle for initiating a request for a stock market quotation;transmitting the request from the vehicle, via a data communications interface with a dispenser of a vehicular energy source, to a computer that is bidirectionally coupled to a data communication network;transferring the request from the computer to a source of stock market quotations, the transferred request being routed over the data communication network;fulfilling the request at the source of stock market quotations and transferring the requested stock market quotation back to the computer, the requested stock market quotation being routed over the data communication network;transmitting the requested stock market quotation from the computer to the vehicle;receiving the requested stock market quotation in the vehicle and storing the received requested stock market quotation within a memory device of the vehicle;and CA 02163200 2004-01-30 presenting the stock market quotation, that is stored in the memory device of the vehicle, within the vehicle in a human perceptible format.

    A system for providing securities quotations to occupants of vehicles, comprising in combination:a computer operable for obtaining quotations of identified securities, said computer being bidirectionally coupled to a data communication network;a dispenser of a vehicular energy source, said dispenser comprising a first data interface, said dispenser being bidirectionally coupled to said data communication network;a vehicle comprising a second data interface for being bidirectionally coupled to said first data interface of said dispenser;and a control unit for transferring information from said vehicle to said computer via said first data interface, said second data interface, said dispenser and said data communication network, the transferred information comprising information for use in identifying at least one security for which a quotation is desired;wherein said computer is responsive to the information for obtaining a quotation for the identified at least one security and for transmitting the obtained quotation towards said dispenser over said data communication network so that said quotation can be presented to the occupant of said vehicle.     A method for providing a quotation of a security to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising the steps of:coupling the vehicle to a dispenser of a vehicular energy source, the dispenser being bidirectionally coupled to a data communication network;initiating a request for a quotation of a security;transmitting the request from the dispenser to a computer that is also bidirectionally coupled to the data communication network;fulfilling the request at the computer and transferring the requested quotation to the dispenser over the data communication network;receiving the requested quotation;and presenting the received quotation in a human perceptible format.

    A method for accessing a remote computer over a communications network, comprising the steps of:coupling a vehicle to means for dispensing a consumable energy source to the vehicle, the dispensing means being coupled to a communications network;formulating a communications network data access request within the vehicle;transferring information from the vehicle to the dispensing means, the transferred information including the communications network data access request and an CA 02163200 2004-01-30 identification of a remote computer that is to fulfil the communications network data access request, the remote computer being coupled to the communication network;forwarding the communications network data access request from the dispensing means to the communications network, and from the communications network to the identified remote computer that is coupled to the communications network;accessing data specified by the data access request at the remote computer;delivering the accessed data to the vehicle;and storing the delivered data within a memory.

    A method for accessing a computer over a communications network, comprising the steps of:coupling a vehicle to a local station via connector means, the local station being coupled to a communications network;formulating a communications network request;transferring information from the vehicle to the local station through the connector means, the transferred information comprising the communications network request ;routing the communications network request from the local station to the communications network;identifying a computer to fulfil the communications CA 02163200 2004-01-30 network request;further routing the communications network request to the identified computer;fulfilling the communications network request at the identified computer and transmitting a response to the communications network request from the computer to the vehicle via the local station and the connector means;and storing at least a portion of the response within a memory.

    A method for presenting information to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising steps of:providing a dispenser of a consumable vehicle energy source ;transferring data from the vehicle to the dispenser, the data comprising demographic data related to an occupant of the vehicle;and selecting information to be presented to the occupant of the vehicle at least in part in response to the transferred demographic data.

    A method for presenting information to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising steps of:providing a dispenser of a consumable vehicle energy source ;transferring data from a transmitter located at the CA 02163200 2004-01-30 vehicle to a receiver located at the dispenser, the transferred data comprising data for identifying an occupant of the vehicle;retrieving, using at least some of the transferred data, additional data that is descriptive of the occupant of the vehicle;and selecting information to be presented to the occupant of the vehicle at least in part in response to the additional data.
