A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the step 2 of selecting includes the steps of:3 obtaining, in cooperation with the received 4 information, further information that identifies a 5 characteristic of an occupant of the vehicle;and 6 choosing, in cooperation with the obtained further 7 information, the at least one message to be input into 8 the vehicle. 1 7. A method as set forth in claim 1 and further 2 including a step of transferring a message from a remote 3 site to a memory means within the vehicle, the message 4 being transferred through the dispensing means. 1 8. A method as set forth in claim 1 and further 2 including a step of transferring a message from a memory 3 means within the vehicle to a remote site, the message 4 being transferred through the dispensing means. 1 9. A method as set forth in claim 7 and further 2 including a step of generating, within the vehicle, a hard 3 copy of the transferred message. 1 10. A system for dispensing a consumable energy 2 source to a vehicle, comprising: 3 means for dispensing a consumable energy source to a 4 vehicle;5 means for coupling the vehicle to the means for 6 dispensing the consumable energy source;a memory located within the vehicle;means for transferring indicia from the memory to the dispensing means;means for receiving the transferred indicia;and 5 means for selecting, in cooperation with the received indicia, at least one message to be provided in human perceptible form to an occupant of the vehicle.

    A method for locating a vehicle, comprising the steps of:storing information that uniquely identifies individual ones of a plurality of missing or stolen vehicles;in response to a coupling of a vehicle to means for J dispensing a consumable energy source to the vehicle, transferring information from a memory device within the vehicle to the dispensing means, the transferred information including vehicle identification 5 information;comparing the transferred vehicle identification information to the stored information that uniquely identifies individual ones of the plurality of missing or stolen vehicles;and 10 in response to the transferred vehicle identification information matching stored information that uniquely identifies a missing or stolen vehicle, correlating a location of the dispensing means with a current location of the vehicle that is coupled to the 15 dispensing means.

    A method for delivering a message to an occupant of a vehicle, comprising the steps of:providing a plurality of databases, individual ones of the databases storing messages that are predetermined 20 to be of interest to a predetermined class of vehicle occupants;in response to a coupling of a vehicle to means for dispensing a consumable energy source to the vehicle, transferring information from a memory device within the vehicle to the dispensing means, the transferred information including information that identifies at least one of a characteristic of the vehicle, a characteristic of an occupant of the vehicle, a location where the vehicle is registered, and a destination location of the vehicle;selecting, in accordance with at least the transferred ». 1 f information, at least one message from the plurality of databases;and delivering, via the dispensing means, the at least one selected message to an occupant of the vehicle. 5

    A system for use with motorized vehicles, the 15 system comprising:a plurality of stations, each of said stations including, means for dispensing a source of power to a motorized vehicle;20 means for receiving an indicia that includes information representative of a value, said receiving means including means for coupling to a memory device that is located within the vehicle for receiving the indicia therefrom, the 25 indicia being stored within the memory device, said indicia further including information for uniquely identifying the vehicle;and local control means having an output coupled to said dispensing means for enabling and disabling an operation thereof, said local control means further having a first input coupled to an output of said receiving means for receiving said indicia therefrom;5 said system further including central control means that is bidirectionally coupled to each of said local control means for receiving said indicia therefrom and for transmitting an enabling signal thereto, said central control means further being bidirectionally 10 coupled to a further control means, said central control means including means for transmitting said indicia to said further control means for verification and for receiving an acknowledging signal therefrom in response to said indicia being verified by said 15 further control means, said central control means further including means for generating said enabling signal and for transmitting said enabling signal to one of said local control means in response to a receipt of said acknowledging signal from said further 20 control means, and wherein each of said local control means enables said dispensing means to operate only in response to a receipt of said enabling signal from said central control means, wherein said dispensing means dispenses one of a liquid fuel and electrical 25 power to said vehicle.

    A system for providing a message to a vehicle, comprising:a local station that includes means for bidirectionally coupling to a vehicle for transferring information including messages between said local station and a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station;message storage means for storing a plurality of Λ ·· » , messages;and message selection means having an input coupled to said local station for receiving information that is transferred from a vehicle that is bidirectionally 5 coupled to said local station, said message selection means being further coupled to said message storage means for choosing at least one message from said plurality of messages in accordance with received information that selectively identifies at least one of a characteristic of an occupant of a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, a characteristic of a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, and a destination of a vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station, said message selection means further including an output coupled to said local station for outputting the selected message thereto for inputting to the vehicle that is bidirectionally coupled to said local station.
