A facile enzymatic synthesis of galactosyl-beta-1, 3 glycals

Abstract

An enzymatic process is disclosed for the preparation of galactosyl.beta.1,3glycal disaccharides such as Gal.beta.1,3Glucal, anintermediate useful in Lea preparation and an inhibitor of .beta.-galactosidase. The process utilizes .beta.-galactosidase, an enzyme usuallyused for bond breaking, to form a bond between a galactoside and a glucal such as glycal, a 6-0-C1-C6 acylglucal or 6-0-C1-C6acetylgalactal.

    - 21 Claims 1. A process for producing a galactosyl.beta.1,3glycal dissacharide that comprises admixing (i) a galactoside donor molecule, (ii) glucal, 6-O-C1-C6 acyl glucal or 6-O-C1-C6 acyl galactal as acceptor and (iii) a catalytic amount of .beta.-galactosidase in an aqueous medium to form an admixture and maintaining the admixture so formed under biological reaction conditions for a time period sufficient to form said galactosyl.beta.1,3glycal disaccharide.
