Reaction products of glyphosate and sulfuric acid and their use as herbicides

Abstract

ABSTRACT Herbicidal compositions are provided which containcombinations of glyphosate [N-( phosphonomethyl)glycine] andsulfuric acid, and/or combinations of glyphosate, sulfuricacid and a chalcogen-containing compound of the formulaR1 - CX - R2 wherein X is a chalcogen compound of theformula R1 - CX - R2 wherein X is selected from oxygen andsulfur, R1 and R2 are independently selected from hydrogen, monovalent organic radicals, NR3R4 and NR5, at least one ofR1 and R2 being NR3R4 or NR5, R3 and R4 are independentlyselected from hydrogen and monovalent organic radicals, andR5 is a divalent organic radical. Such compositions containreaction products of glyphosate and sulfuric acid, and/or ofglyphosate, sulfuric acid and the chalcogen compound, andthey may also contain excess glyphosate or sulfuric acid. They effect more rapid, more thorough, broader spectrumvegetation control, and are more stable chemically and lesstoxic than other glyphosate-containing herbicides.
