The present invention relates, in general, to the precision folding of sheet material (21,221,221a,321) and, more particularly, relates to preparing the sheet (21,221,221a,321). The method of preparing a sheet of material (21,221,221a,321) for bending along a bend line (23,223,223a,323) comprises the step of forming at least one displacement (28,36,41,51,61,71,81,222,222a) in the thickness direction of the sheet of material (21,221,221a,321) with a portion of the periphery of the displacement (28,36,41,51,61,71,81,222,222a) closest to the bend line (23,223,223a,323) providing an edge (26,26a,38,326) and an opposed face (27,27a,37,327) configured and positioned to produce edge-to-face engagement of the sheet of material (21,221,221a,321) by rotating the edge (26,26a,38,326) into engagement with the face (27,27a,37,327) during bending, thereby controlling the location of bending.
