Isa adapter card

Abstract

Use of ISA Adapter Card (ISAAC) (16) to ensure timing of application of power and logic to ISA, SCSA and MVIP cards when those cards are plugged into standard ISA connectors of the ISAAC (16) and the ISAAC (16) is subsequently plugged into an active ISA, SCSA, and/or MVIP bus(es) such that any server connected to the backplane (10) does not have to be shut down to protect ISA, SCSA and MVIP cards when inserted and removed from the backplane (10).

5 claims: 3 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:1. A system comprising: a telephone switch having a back plane with a variable length pin receptacle;and an adaptor card with variable length pins capable of being received into the receptacle of said back plane and having an ISA standard receptacle for receiving a conventional ISA-based standard telephony expansion (SCSA or MVIP) card, said adaptor card including: (a) means for detecting the insertion of the adaptor card into the receptacle of the said back plane, (b) means for immediately connecting the ground bus of the expansion card to the ground bus of the back plane through the ground bus of the adaptor card, and (c) means for delaying the connection of the signal bus of said back plane to the signal bus of the expansion card for a first predetermined period of time.
  2. 2
The system of Claim 1 wherein the adaptor card f rther comprises means for delaying the connection of the power bus of the back plane to the power bus of the expansion card for a second predetermined period of time, wherein the first predetermined period of time is longer than the second predetermined period of time.
  3. 3
In a system including a telephone switch having a back plane with a variable length pin receptacle, a method of connecting an expansion card to the busses thereof without removing power therefrom comprising the steps of:(a) providing a conventional ISA-to-telephony standard expansion (SCSA or MVIP) card;(b) providing an adaptor card with variable length pins capable of being received into the receptacle of the back plane and having an ISA standard receptacle for receiving a conventional ISA-to-telephony standard expansion (SCSA or MVIP) card;(c) connecting the expansion card to the adaptor card though the ISA standard receptacle;(d) detecting the insertion of the adaptor card into the receptacle of the said back plane, (e) immediately connecting the ground bus of the expansion card to the ground bus of the back plane through the ground bus of the adaptor card, and (f) delaying the connection of the signal bus of the back plane to the signal bus of the expansion card for a first predetermined period of time, whereby a non-hot pluggable expansion card may be connected to the back plane without the removal of power from the back plane .
  4. 4
The method of Claim 3 further comprising delaying the connection of the power bus of the back plane to the power bus of the expansion card for a second predetermined period of time shorter than the first predetermined period of time.
  5. 5
An adaptor card for a plural pin, edge connector expansion card having a circuit which (a) is susceptible of damage by the application of power to the plural pins thereof in one of a first set of sequences and (b) not susceptible to damage by the application of power to the plural pins thereof in one of a second set of sequences, said adaptor card comprising:a female plural pin connector adapted to receive the male connectors of an expansion card which is susceptible to damage by the mating of the male connectors directly to a bus which is active at the time the expansion card is mated thereto, there being no selectivity in the timing of the mating of the pins of the female connectors of the adaptor card to the expansion card, and a plural pin male connector adapted for insertion into the female connector of a computer bus, said plural pin male connector being configured to provide selectivity in the timing of the relative mating of the pins of the adaptor card to the bus so that signals from the bus through the adaptor card in not applied to the adaptor until after the grounding of the ground bus of the adaptor card to the computer bus;a detector for detecting the connection of the adaptor card to the computer bus;and semiconductor switch means responsive to said detector for delaying the connection of the signal bus of the adaptor card for predetermined time interval.
