Communication access system with distributed processing

Abstract

A method and apparatus for distributing protocol processing among a plurality of computing platforms. Data communications equipment (10) such as Remote Access Devices, Communication Servers, Terminal Servers, and Dial-up Routers provide single user or large-scale multiple user communication access to various computing environments. The equipment costs and performance of levels of providing such access equipment is related to the amount of CPU processing capability and memory required to support the desired number of serial communications links. It is common to use protocols that terminate in their entirely in the same processing machine. This invention encompasses method developed to increase the cost/performance capabilities of the communication equipment that supports these serial links, primarily by means of distributing the protocol processing across multiple computing platforms, including devices such as modems (m).

AMENDED CLAIMS [received by the International Bureau on 12 November 1996 ( 12. 1 1 .96) original cl aims 2-4, 7-9 , 14-18, 20-23 , 28-30 and 32 amended ; new claims 34-53 added ; remaining claims unchanged (8 pages ) ] 1. A method for routing incoming calls into a computer system to achieve an efficient call throughput, the method performed in a system comprising a plurality of modems, comprising the steps of:receiving said incoming calls and routing said calls to said plurality of modems, distributing the processing of protocols for said incoming calls among multiple computing platforms;and subsequently routing the incoming calls to said computer system over a network.
  2. 6
A method for routing outgoing calls from a computer system to a communications link to achieve an efficient call throughput, the method performed in a system comprising a plurality of modems, comprising the steps of:routing said outgoing calls from a network to said modems;distributing the processing of protocols for said outgoing calls among multiple computing platforms in said modems, and subsequently routing the outgoing calls to said communications link.
  3. 11
A network access server, comprising, in combination:an interface operatively connecting said network access server to a communications link;a plurality of modems;transmission means for passing calls from said interface to said modems;and a gateway receiving said calls from said modems and routing said calls from said network access server onto a network;wherein at least one of said plurality of modems further comprises a data processor that processes protocols for incoming or outgoing calls.
  4. 18
A method for routing a call via a modem into a computer system, comprising the steps of:receiving an incoming call at said modem;performing the processing of protocols for said incoming call in a computing platform in said modem;and routing said incoming call to said computer system.
  5. 21
A method for routing an outgoing call from a computer system to a communication link via a modem, comprising the steps of:routing said outgoing call from said computer system to said modem;performing the processing of protocols for said outgoing call in a computing platform in said modem;and placing said outgoing call onto to said communications link.
  6. 34
A communications apparatus for routing calls between a communication line and a computer system, comprising in combination:a plurality of modems connected to said communication line;an interface operatively connecting said plurality of modems to said computer system over a network;wherein each of said plurality of modems comprises a processor that processes said calls between said communications line and said computer system, and wherein said processor implements in software the processing of communications protocols for said calls.
  7. 39
A communications apparatus for routing calls between a communications line and a personal computer with a central processing unit, comprising in combination:a modem connected to said personal computer, said modem comprising a computing platform which processes said calls between said communications line and said personal computer with a central processing unit;and an interface operatively connecting said modem to a commumcations line;whereby the computational load on said central processing unit of said personal computer and the latency in call routing is reduced.
  8. 47
In a communications apparatus having a plurality of modems for transmitting and receiving a call between a communication line and a network, each of said modems comprising a computing platform; a method for distributing the processing of protocols among a plurality of computing platforms, comprising the steps of:determining the protocol of said call between said communications line and said network;assigning said call to one of said modems;configuring said computing platform for one of said modems according to said protocol;and transmitting said incoming call or said outgoing call in accordance with said protocol;whereby efficient call throughput between a communications line and a network is achieved.
