Layer 2 protocol in a cellular communication system

Abstract

A method for transmitting messages using an efficient communications link protocol over an air interface of a cellular communications system (Fig. 7) is disclosed. A frame in the protocol is divided into a plurality of sections including a header section (BU) and data section (DATA). The header section contains a field which indicates what type of information is contained in the frame.

  1. 1
We claim:1. A method for transmitting information in a cellular communication system with a layer 2 protocol, comprising the steps of: dividing a frame into a plurality of sections including a header section;5 and coding said header section so as to identify what type of information is in said frame.
  2. 3
A method for discriminating between a broadcast control channel and SPACH channels in a superframe in a cellular communication system with a layer 2 protocol, comprising the steps of:assigning a first cyclic redundancy check to said SPACH frames;and assigning a second cyclic redundancy check to said broadcast control 15 channel frames, wherein a mobile station distinguishes between said frames by examining said cyclic redundancy checks.
  3. 5
A method for paging a plurality of mobile stations in a cellular 20 communication system, comprising the steps of:assigning said plurality of mobile stations a user group identification code;and broadcasting a paging message containing said user group identification code in layer 2 protocol overhead information for said paging message. 25
  4. 6
A method for providing reserved channels in a layer 2 protocol in a cellular communication system, comprising the step of:providing a field in broadcast control channel overhead messages, wherein said field indicates where the reserved channels are located within a superframe.
  5. 7
A method for prohibiting a mobile station from using a cell in a ' 30 cellular communication system comprising the steps of:providing a flag in a frame in a layer 2 protocol, wherein said flag indicates whether the mobile station is barred form using the cell;and enabling said flag.
  6. 9
A method for sending a message to a mobile station in a cellular communication system, comprising the steps of:broadcasting a page for said mobile station in a plurality of cells, wherein said page asks the mobile station if the mobile station can receive a message, said page also indicating to the mobile station what type of message is going to be transmitted;transmitting an acknowledgement from said mobile station to a base station when said mobile station can receive said message;determining in which cell the mobile station is located in by examining said acknowledgement;and sending said message to said mobile station in the cell the mobile station is located in.
  7. 11
A mobile station for use in a cellular communication system, comprising:means for receiving signals from said cellular system, wherein a plurality of frames are contained within said signals;and means for distinguishing between different types of frames by examining cyclic redundancy checks assigned to each frame by said cellular system.
  8. 14
A cellular communication system with a plurality of mobile stations and at least one base station, comprising:means for assigning different cyclic redundancy checks to different types of frames;means for transmitting a plurality of different frames using a layer 2 protocol to said mobile stations, wherein said mobile stations distinguish between said different frames by examining said cyclic redundancy checks.
  9. 17
A cellular communication system using a layer 2 protocol with a plurality of mobile stations and at least one base station, comprising:means for transmitting and receiving signals, wherein a plurality of frames are contained within said signals;means for dividing a frame into a plurality of sections including a header section and an information section;and means for coding said header section so as to identify what type of information is in said frame.
  10. 20
A cellular communication system with a plurality of mobile stations and at least one base station, comprising:means for assigning a group of mobile stations a user group identification code;means for storing said user group identification code in said mobile stations;and means for broadcasting a paging message containing said user group identification code in layer 2 protocol overhead information of said paging message.
  11. 21
A mobile station for use in a cellular communication system, comprising:means for storing a user group identification code, said user group identification code identifying said mobile station as being a member of a group of mobile stations;means for receiving a paging message containing a user group identification code in layer 2 protocol overhead information;means for comparing said stored user group identification code with said received user group identification code;and means for responding to said paging message when said user group identification codes match.
  12. 22
A method for providing channels in a layer 2 protocol in a cellular communication system, comprising the steps of:dividing a superframe into a plurality of different types of channels;and providing fields in broadcast control channel overhead messages, wherein said fields indicate boundaries between the different types of channels in the superframe.
  13. 25
A cellular communication system using a layer 2 protocol, comprising:means for dividing a superframe into a plurality of different types of channels;and means for indicating boundaries between the different types of channels in the superframe.
  14. 29
A cellular communication system with a plurality of mobile stations and at least one base station, comprising:means for broadcasting a page for a mobile station in a plurality of cells, wherein said page asks the mobile station if the mobile station can receive a message, said page also indicates to the mobile station what type of message is going to be transmitted;means for transmitting an acknowledgement from said mobile station to a base station when said mobile station can receive said message;means for determining in which cell the mobile station is located in by examining said acknowledgement;and means for sending said message to said mobile station in the cell the mobile station is located in.
