WO2015114153A1

Dynamic tire pressure regulator for bicycles

Abstract

Wheel hub assembly of a bicycle wheel comprising a wheel axle (10), a rotary pump comprising a pump housing (7), a pump rotor (48), a first fluid port (9) configured for fluidly coupling to a pneumatic tire and a second fluid port (34) configured for fluidly coupling to a fluid reservoir. The assembly further comprises control means (14) for controlling actuation or a mode/state of operation. The pump is configured for displacing fluid between the first (9) and second (34) fluid ports. The pump rotor (48) is configured for rotating relative to the pump housing (7) coaxially with the wheel axle (10), and the pump housing (7) is configured for rotating relative to the wheel axle (10). The assembly allows for conveniently and efficiently modifying the tire pressure in bicycles at will while riding, in as many cycles as desired and without contaminating the air inside the tires.

  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. Wheel hub assembly of a bicycle wheel, comprising:a wheel axle (10);a rotary pump (30, 33, 40) comprising a pump housing (7), a pump rotor (33, 48), a first fluid port (9) configured for fluidly coupling to a pneumatic tire (3) and a second fluid port (17, 34) configured for fluidly coupling to a fluid reservoir (8, 18), wherein the pump is configured for displacing fluid between the first and second fluid ports;and control means (14) for controlling actuation of the pump, characterized in that the pump rotor (33, 48) is configured for rotating relative to the pump housing (7) coaxially with the wheel axle (10), and the pump housing (7) is configured for rotating relative to the wheel axle (10).
  2. 2
Assembly for regulating pressure of a pneumatic tire (3) of a bicycle wheel, comprising:a fluid reservoir (8, 18) configured for mounting on the wheel, concentrically to an axle (10) of the wheel and configured for storing fluid at a pressure higher than the pressure in the pneumatic tire, a rotary pump (30, 33, 40) comprising a pump housing (7), a pump rotor (33, 48), a first fluid port (9) configured for being in fluid communication with the pneumatic tire (3) and a second fluid port (17, 34) configured for being in fluid communication with the reservoir (8, 18), and control means (14) for controlling actuation of the pump, wherein the pneumatic tire, the reservoir, the pump and the fluid ports are configured to form a closed fluid circuit and wherein the pump is configured for displacing fluid between the first and second fluid ports, characterized in that the pump rotor (33, 48) is configured for rotating relative to the pump housing (7) coaxially with the wheel axle (10), and the pump housing (7) is configured for rotating relative to the wheel axle (10).
  3. 5
Assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the control means comprises a clutch mechanism (35, 50, 36, 37, 38), the clutch mechanism comprising a first part (50) fixed to the pump rotor (33, 48) and a second part (35) fixed to the wheel axle, wherein the first part and the second part are operable to enter into engagement to keep the pump rotor static with the wheel axle.
  4. 7
Assembly of any one of the preceding claims, having a second state of operation, wherein the pump is configured for being maintained in a position such that fluid communication between the first and second fluid ports is blocked.
  5. 11
Assembly of any one of the preceding claims, having a third state of operation, wherein the pump is passive and fluid is configured to be displaced from the second fluid port to the first fluid port, thereby inflating the tire.
  6. 16
Assembly of any one of the preceding claims, having a first state of operation wherein the pump, when actuated, is configured for pumping fluid from the first fluid port (9) to the second fluid port (17, 34), thereby deflating the pneumatic tire (3), having a second state of operation, wherein the pump is configured for being maintained in a position such that fluid communication between the first and second fluid ports is blocked, and having a third state of operation, wherein the pump is passive and fluid is configured to be displaced from the second fluid port to the first fluid port, thereby inflating the tire, wherein the control means (14) is operable for changing between the first, second and third states of operation.
  7. 20
Assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pump is a vane pump (33, 30).
  8. 29
Assembly of any one of the preceding claims, comprising a wheel hub (7), and wherein the pump housing is integral with the hub (7).
  9. 31
A bicycle wheel (3) comprising the assembly as in any one of the preceding claims.
