WO2012166319A1

Audio configuration based on selectable audio modes

Abstract

An operating system of a device receives, from an application executing on that device, data that identifies a category of hardware resources that the application needs to use in order to function. That category is mapped to a specified set of hardware resources of the device. The operating system also receives, from the application, data that identifies a mode. The mode corresponds to an intended use of a set of hardware resources and is mapped to a group of hardware resource settings that are consistent with the intended use. The operating system allocates, to the application, a particular set of hardware resources that are mapped to the category. The operating system configures one or more hardware resources in the particular set of hardware resources in conformity with a particular group of settings that are mapped to the mode.

  1. 1
CLAIMS What is claimed is:1. A method comprising: receiving, from an application, first data that identifies a particular category of hardware resources, of a plurality of categories of hardware resources, that the application needs to use in order to function;wherein each category in the plurality of categories is mapped to a different set of hardware resources of a device on which the application is executing;receiving, from the application, second data that identifies a particular mode of a plurality of modes;wherein each mode of the plurality of modes (a) corresponds to a different intended use of a set of hardware resources and (b) is mapped to a different group of settings applicable to hardware resources and consistent with the intended use;and in response to receiving the first data and the second data, (1) allocating, to the application, a particular set of hardware resources that are mapped to the particular category and the particular mode, and (2) configuring one or more hardware resources in the particular set of hardware resources in conformity with a particular group of settings that are mapped to the particular mode;wherein the first data differs from the second data;wherein the method is performed by one or more computing devices.
  2. 10
A method comprising:receiving, from a first application, a first mode identifier that corresponds to a particular intended use of a device on which the application executes;wherein the first mode identifier is mapped, in a table, to a plurality of settings for a plurality of resources of the device;wherein the plurality of resources of the device include at least one of (a) an audio input resource and (b) an audio output resource;wherein the table maps a plurality of different mode identifiers to different groups of settings for different subsets of resources of the device;and configuring one or more resources of the device with the plurality of settings to which the first mode identifier is mapped;wherein the method is performed by one or more computing devices.
  3. 12
One or more non-transitory storage media storing instructions which, when executed by one or more computing devices, cause performance of the method recited in any one of Claims 1-11.
  4. 13
A system comprising means for performing the method recited in any one of Claims 1-11.
  5. 14
A device comprising:two or more audio inputs;two or more audio outputs;two or more digital signal processing modules;memory storing a category mapping table that (a) maps at least a first category identifier to a first subset of the audio inputs, audio outputs, and digital signal processing modules and (b) maps at least a second category identifier to a second subset of the audio inputs, audio outputs, and digital signal processing modules;memory storing a mode mapping table that (a) maps at least a first mode identifier to a first group of settings applicable to a subset of the audio inputs, audio outputs, and digital signal processing modules and (b) maps at least a second mode identifier to a second group of settings applicable to a subset of the audio inputs, audio outputs, and digital signal processing modules;memory storing a first application that (a) specifies, via the first category identifier, that the first application needs the first subset allocated to the first application and (b) specifies, via the first mode identifier, that the first application needs the first group of settings applied to resources in the first subset;and memory storing a second application that (a) specifies, via the second category identifier, that the second application needs the second subset allocated to the second application and (b) specifies, via the second mode identifier, that the second application needs the second group of settings applied to resources in the second subset;wherein the first and second groups of settings specify at least one of: (1) analog gain levels, (2) audio sample rates, (3) digital signal processor chains, (4) microphones of the device that are to be used to receive audio input, (5) speakers of the device that are to be used to transmit audio output, and (6) minimum or maximum volume levels.
