Methods for establishing a secure point-to-point call on a trunked network

Abstract

Methods for establishing secure point-to-point communications in a trunked radio system include receiving, at a trunking controller, a request from a source endpoint for a traffic channel for confidential communications between the source endpoint and a destination endpoint using a shared unique first symmetric key. The trunking controller provides keying material related to the symmetric key over the secured control channel to at least one of the source or destination endpoints and assigns a traffic channel. Moreover, in response to the request, the controller assigns a traffic channel. The keying material enables the unique first symmetric key to be securely established between the source and destination endpoints.

CLAIMS We claim:1. A method for establishing secure point-to-point communications, the method comprising: a controller, in a trunked radio system, performing: receiving, from a source endpoint over a secure control channel, a request for a traffic channel for confidential communications between the source endpoint and a destination endpoint, wherein a unique first symmetric key shared between the source and destination endpoints is used for the confidential communications;responsive to the request, providing keying material related to the unique first symmetric key over the secure control channel to at least one of the source endpoint or the destination endpoint to enable secure establishment of the unique first symmetric key at both the source and destination endpoints;responsive to the request, assigning the traffic channel.
  2. 15
A method for establishing secure point-to-point communications, the method comprising:a destination endpoint performing: receiving from a controller in a trunked radio system, over a secure control channel, a call request message containing a public key of a source endpoint;generating a unique first symmetric key for confidential communications between the source and destination endpoints over a traffic channel assigned by the controller encrypting the unique first symmetric key with the public key of the source endpoint;providing the encrypted unique first symmetric key to the source endpoint.
  3. 18
A method for establishing secure point-to-point communications, the method comprising:a source endpoint performing: sending, over a secure control channel to a controller in a trunked radio system, a request for a traffic channel;responsive to sending the request, receiving, from the controller over the secure control channel, an encrypted unique first symmetric key and a ticket to a destination endpoint, wherein the encrypted unique first symmetric key comprises a unique first symmetric key encrypted with a unique second key shared between the source endpoint and the controller, wherein the ticket to the destination endpoint comprises the unique first symmetric key encrypted with a unique third key shared between destination endpoint and the controller;and providing the ticket to the destination endpoint over a traffic channel assigned in response to the request for a traffic channel.
