A data storage device and method

Abstract

An entertainment device, comprises a communication arrangement operable to receive audio segment data from an audio segment data source and to receive audio segment selection data from an audio segment selection data source in connection with an interactive audio segment data selection session as between the entertainment device and the audio segment selection data source; an audio segment selector operable to generate audio segment selection data in response to selections made by a user interacting with a user interface of the entertainment device; and a storage arrangement operable to store the received audio segment data; in which: the storage arrangement is operable to limit the duration of storage of audio segment data which was received from the audio segment data source and which was selected according to either the received audio segment selection data or the generated audio segment selection data.

  1. 1
^ CLAIMS 1. An entertainment device, comprising:a communication arrangement operable to receive audio segment data from an audio segment data source and to receive audio segment selection data from an audio segment selection data source in connection with an interactive audio segment data selection session as between the entertainment device and the audio segment selection data source;an audio segment selector operable to generate audio segment selection data in response to selections made by a user interacting with a user interface of the entertainment device;and a storage arrangement operable to store the received audio segment data;in which: the storage arrangement is operable to limit the duration of storage of audio segment data which was received from the audio segment data source and which was selected according to either the received audio segment selection data or the generated audio segment selection data.
  2. 4
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the communication arrangement is operable to establish a communications link with the audio 3 segment data source, and in which the duration of storage is limited to that period in which a communications link between the entertainment device and the audio segment data source remains active.
  3. 8
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the storage arrangement is operable to store both the received audio segment selection data and the generated audio segment selection data.
  4. 10
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the audio segment selection data indicates the timing of selection of audio segment data.
  5. 11
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims operable to reproduce an audio sequence, the sequence being based upon a combination of the received audio segment selection data and the generated audio segment selection data. 3?
  6. 12
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the communication arrangement is operable to communicate with an authorisation server.
  7. 15
An entertainment device according to either of claims 13 and 14 in which the authorisation to reproduce is limited to reproduction within a sequence reproduced in accordance with a combination of the received audio segment selection data and the generated audio segment selection data.
  8. 17
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the entertainment device is a Sony®PlayStation Portable®device.
  9. 18
An entertainment device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the communication arrangement is operable to transmit audio segment data and audio segment selection data to, and to receive audio segment selection data from, a second entertainment device;the fϊrstmentioned device comprising audio segment selection logic operable to generate audio segment selection data in response to selections made by a user interacting with a user interface of the first entertainment device;and an authorisation server operable to provide authorisation to the second entertainment device to reproduce audio segment data transmitted by the firstmentioned entertainment device to the second entertainment device and which was selected according to either the received audio segment selection data or the generated audio segment selection data.
  10. 21
A data carrier which carries audio segment data and an authorisation limit value indicative of the number of times a reproduction authorisation may be granted by an entertainment device to any second entertainment device with which the entertainment device exchanges audio segment selection data.
  11. 22
A data carrier comprising computer readable instructions that when executed by a computer, cause the computer to operate as an entertainment device in accordance with any one of claims 1 to 20.
  12. 23
A method of data storage by an entertainment device, comprising the steps of:i. establishing a communication link with an audio segment data source;ii. receiving audio segment data from said audio segment data source;iii. storing received audio segment data;iv. determining if one or more of the received audio segments are selected via either the entertainment device or the audio segment data source during a collaborative jamming session;and v. limiting the duration of storage of audio segment data which was received from the audio segment data source and which was selected according to either the received audio segment selection data or the generated audio segment selection data.
  13. 25
A data carrier comprising computer readable instructions that when executed by a computer, cause the computer to carry out the method of data storage in accordance with any one of claims 23 to 24.
  14. 26
Computer software which when executed by a computer causes the computer to carry out the method of data storage in accordance with any one of claims 23 to 24.
