A wireless communications system (100) including a network application server (102) to transmit an expedited request packet; and a base station (106, 108) to receive the expedited request packet from the network application server (102), attempt to reserve channel resources for a traffic channel to communicate with the SU (110, 112), and notify the network application server (102) of whether the channel resources have been reserved. The base station (106, 108) may notify the network application server (102) by transmitting the expedited request packet to the SU (110 112), receiving a response to the expedited request packet from the SU (110, 112), marking the response to indicate whether the channel resources have been reserved, and sending the marked response to the network application server (102).
