Method and system for automatic identification and orientation of medical images

Abstract

A method and system (100) for computer-aided detection of abnormal lesions in digital mammograms is described, wherein digital films are processed using an automated and computerized method of detecting the order and orientation of a set of films (102). In one embodiment, anatomical features are used to detect the order, orientation and identification of a film series. After processing, the system provides an output on a display device to a radiologist that is in an order and orientation preferred by the radiologist. In yet another embodiment of the invention, films from one case are distinguished from films in another case. In this manner and through the use of a bulk loader, a large number of films can be stacked together and fed into the system at one time. A method and system for computer-aided detection of abnormal lesions in digital mammograms is described, wherein digital films are processed using an automated and computerized method of detecting the order and orientation of a set of films. In one embodiment, anatomic features are used to detect the order, orientation and identification of a film series. In another embodiment of the invention, a technologist feeds films into the system in any order and orientation. After processing, the system provides an output on a display device to a radiologist that is in an order and orientation preferred by the radiologist. In yet another embodiment of the invention, films from one case are distinguished from films of another case. In this manner and through the use of a bulk loader, a large number of films can be stacked together and fed into the system at one time.

  1. 1
What is claimed is:1. A method for displaying digitized radiographic images, comprising the steps of: receiving multiple digitized radiographic images in a received orientation;determining the received orientations and order for a plurality of the digitized 5 radiographic images;and displaying the digitized radiographic images in a predetermined orientation and order. , Q 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining the received orientations further comprises the step of determining chest walls on the digitized radiographic images. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining the received orientations further comprises the step of determining lateralities of the digitized radiographic images. 15 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining the received orientations further comprises the step of determining radiographic views on the digitized radiographic images. Q 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the step of determining the radiographic views further comprises the step of identifying lead marker images on the digitized radiographic images. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein identifying lead marker images includes 5 recognizing optical characters on the digitized radiographic images. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining the received orientations further comprises the step of determining tops and bottoms of the digitized radiographic images. 0 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the radiographic images are from one case. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the multiple radiographic images are from multiple cases. 5 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of separating the radiographic images into multiple cases. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein further digitized radiographic images are oriented and displayed using information derived from the determining step of claim 1. 5 12. The method of claim 1, wherein orientation and display errors are corrected using information derived from the determining step of claim 1. 13. A method for separating multiple digitized radiographic images, comprising the Q steps of: receiving multiple digitized radiographic images;determining the presence of a case separation indicator;grouping a number of the digitized radiographic images into a case. 1 5 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the case separation indicator is received prior to a number of radiographic images in a case. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the case separation indicator is a visual attribute on a first film of a case. 20 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the visual attribute is a label. 17. The method of claim 15, wherein the visual attribute is a unique marking.
  2. 2
2 18. A system for displaying digitized radiographic images, the system comprising:a scanning device capable of producing digitized radiographic images;a memory for storing the digitized radiographic images;a processing device capable of receiving from the first memory multiple digitized radiographic images in a O Q received orientation, and determining the received orientations and order for a plurality of the digitized radiographic images, and a display device capable of displaying the digitized radiographic images in a predetermined orientation and order. 35 19. The system of claim 18, wherein the processing device is further capable of determining chest walls on the digitized radiographic images. 20 The system of claim 18, wherein the processing device is further capable of determining lateralities of the digitized radiographic images.
