System and method for planning a telecommunications network for mobile terminals

Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method for planning networks for mobile terminals that use a radio interface based on the Code Division Multiple Access or CDMA technique. More particularly, the system and method provide a step 500 whereby the Service Areas in these networks can be calculated using, as a reference, Domains calculated by means of a step 300 on the basis of real propagation models and taking a predetermined or estimated traffic into account on a pixel by pixel basis. In addition, the system and method make it possible to calculate the Macrodiversity Areas by means of a step 700, and thus to take the areas in which mobile terminals are capable of exchanging information with more than one radio base station into account at the planning step.

  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A method for planning a telecommunications network for mobile terminals in which said network employs CDMA access techniques and comprises a plurality of Coverage Areas in a geographical area, each Coverage Area consisting of an equipment which radiates a radioelectric signal and of a plurality of elementary geographical areas or pixels in which said radioelectric signal is received by said mobile terminals; the method being characterized by:I)- A first group of data preparation steps comprising at least a) - A step for calculating/estimating pixel-by-pixel traffic values for said geographical area;and b) - A step for calculating a Domain in each of said Coverage Areas, said Domain consisting of the pixel location in which said radioelectric signal exceeds a predetermined threshold;II) A second group of network planning steps comprising at least a)- A step for calculating a Service Area in each of said ' Domains on the basis of said traffic values, said Service Area consisting of a set of pixels in which specific network services can actually be provided in accordance with said access technique.
  2. 2
A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that said Service Area is calculated by determining a loading factor for said Service Area having a value less than or equal to a predetermined threshold.
  3. 3
A method in accordance with claim 1 or 2, characterized in that said step Ila) also comprises IIa2) A step for verifying pixel-by-pixel and for each of said specific network services that said mobile terminals have characteristics that are compatible with a specific network service in said Service Area. 1 ' 4. A method in accordance with claim 3, characterized in that said step IIa2) further comprises a procedure for identifying, in cases where said characteristics of the mobile terminals are not compatible with said specific network service, a cell which is compatible with the characteristics of said mobile terminal, and for assigning said mobile terminal to the Service Area of said cell which is compatible with said specific network service.
  4. 4
    5. A method in accordance with claim 3 or 4, characterized by a further verification step comprising at least - A step for calculating uplink carrier to interference ratio (C/I) values for each pixel and for each specific network service;- A step for verifying whether said signal to interference ratio satisfies the requirements of said specific network service .
  5. 5
    6. A method in accordance with claim 1 or 2, characterized in that II)- Said second group of steps also comprises b) - A step for identifying Macrodiversity Areas or the pixel location in said geographical area where said mobile terminal is capable of decoding the radioelectric signal originating from a plurality of units radiating the signal.
  6. 6
    7. A method in accordance with claim 6 characterized in that said step lib) comprises a procedure for analyzing, for each Service Area, pixels that are outside the Service Area but inside the corresponding Domain, and for checking whether said pixels can be served using Macrodiversity by at least one adjacent Service Area.
  7. 7
    8. A processing system programmed to implement the method in accordance with any of the foregoing claims .
  8. 8
    9. Computer program modules comprising computer program code means, said computer program modules being able when loaded in a processing system to implement the method in I accordance with any of the foregoing claims.
  9. 9
    10. A method for identifying Macrodiversity Areas or pixel locations where a mobile terminal is capable of decoding radioelectric signals originating from a plurality of equipments in a telecommunications network for mobile terminals in which said network employs CDMA access techniques and comprises a plurality of Coverage Areas in a geographical area, each Coverage Area consisting of an equipment which radiates a radioelectric signal and of a plurality of elementary geographical areas or pixels in which said radioelectric signal is received by said mobile terminals ; the method being characterized by:a) a step for calculating a Domain in each of said Coverage Areas, said Domain consisting of the pixel location in which said radioelectric signal exceeds a predetermined threshold;b) a step for calculating a Service Area in each of said Domains by determining a set of pixels in which specific network services can actually be provided in accordance with said access technique;c) a step for analyzing, for each Service Area, pixels that are outside the Service Area but inside the corresponding Domain, and for checking whether said pixels can be served using Macrodiversity by at least one adjacent Service Area.
