Methods and systems for processing calls in a packet network using peer call servers

Abstract

A method for processing calls in a packet network using peer call servers includes receiving a setup message from a first gateway in the packet network. The setup message includes a first address for a called endpoint. The call server that receives the setup message translates the message into a call server ID and an endpoint ID specifying the remote call server corresponding to the called party. The call server sends the call server ID and the endpoint ID to the remote call server. The remote call server obtains a call signaling transport address to the called end user based in the endpoint ID.

  1. 1
CLA1MS What is claimed is:1. A packet telephony manager for generating and distributing translation information to call servers in a packet network, the packet telephony manager comprising: (a) a translation information generator/distributor for generating translation information including a unique call server ID for each call server in the packet network and a unique endpoint ID for each endpoint in the packet network;and (b) a translation database for storing the translation information.
  2. 7
A method for processing calls in a packet network using peer call servers, the method comprising:(a) receiving a SETUP message from a first gateway in a packet network, the SETUP message including a first address for a called endpoint;(b) executing a translation based on the first address to obtain at least one entity address, the entity address including a call server ID and an endpoint ID;(c) transmitting the entity address to a second call server specified by the call server ID;and (d) at the second call server, locating a call signaling transport address for the called endpoint based on the endpoint ID.
  3. 13
A method for processing calls in a packet network using peer call servers, the method comprising:(a) at a first call server, receiving a SETUP message from a first gateway in a packet network, the SETUP message including a first address corresponding to a called endpoint in the packet network;(b) formulating a query including the first address and transmitting the query to a network translation server;(c) at the network translation server, executing a translation to - determine at least one entity address corresponding to the first address, the entity address including a call server ID and an endpoint ID corresponding to the first address;(d) transmitting a response to the first call server, the response including the entity address;(e) at the first call server, receiving the response, formulating a first call signaling message including the call server ID and the endpoint ID, and sending the first call signaling message to a second call server specified by the call server ID;and (f) at the second call server, receiving the first call signaling message and locating a call signaling transport address for the called endpoint based on the endpoint ID.
  4. 22
A method for provisioning routing information in a plurality of call servers in a packet network, the method comprising:(a) formulating first translation information for a first call server in a packet network and second translation information for a second call server in a packet network, the first translation information including at least one first endpoint ID corresponding to a first endpoint hosted by the second call server and a call server ID for the second call server, the second translation information including at least one second ' endpoint ID for an endpoint hosted by the first call server and a call server ID for the first call server;and (b) transmitting the first translation information to the first call server and the second translation information to the second call server.
  5. 25
A method for correlating call signaling messages associated with multiple calls and sent over a single network connection, the method comprising:(a) at a first call agent, formulating a first call signaling message associated with the first call, the first call signaling message having a first half call ID including an allocation parameter for indicating a call originator and a call counter for identifying the first call;(b) setting the allocation parameter to a first value for identifying the first call agent as originator of the first call and the call counter to a first count value for identifying the first call;(c) transmitting the first call signaling message to a second call agent over a first network connection;(d) at the second call agent, in response to receiving the first message, formulating a second call signaling message including a second half call ID having an allocation parameter and a call counter;(e) setting the allocation parameter to a second value for identifying the second call server as non-originator of the first call and setting the call counter to the first count value;and (f) transmitting the second call signaling message to the first call agent over the first network connection.
