Be it known that I, Peter M. Wege, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the cpunty ofWashington and 5 State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Doots or Walls of Sheet Metal, of which the following is a specification.

.The object of this invention is to pro10 vide an improved ^construction' of door or wall in which the parts carPbe economically manufactured and quickly assembled.

The invention is embodied in the construction herein shown and described and then 15 particularly pointed out in the claims.

The parts are constructed chiefly of sheet nietal. The door shown is rectangular in outline. Its inner sheet 6 is formed- of a rectangular sheet of metal slit or cut out at 25 the corners and bent up at the margins aS seen at 7 to stand at right angles to the body of the sheet. The ends of the bent up margins can be lapped and suitably secured together or'they can be mitered and welded, 30 the resulting structure iii either case being of a shallow box form. Each of the four margins or flanges 7 is then slit and pressed out to form a suitable number of catches 8 with their straight,shoulders at 9 presented 35 toward the plane of the body of the sheet.

The front sheet 10 is in form generally speaking similar to that of the back except that it is of slightly larger area. The margins of the front sheet are bent to form a 40 flange 11 and said flange is further bent to form an inwardly extending flange 12. The ends of the flanges 11 and 12 at the comers of the sheet are secured together in any suitable manner or as before described, with 45 reference to the rear sheet. The structure thus described resembles the lid of a box, except that it has the flanges 12. The flanges 11 are preferably of such depth that the flanges 12 can be sprung over the catches 8 5o with the edges of the flange 7 abutting or nearly abutting against the front sheet 10 to prevent movement of the sheets toward or from each other. The front wall is thus applied to the rear one in very much the manner in which a lid is applied to its box ex- 55 cept that considerable pressure may be necessary to cause the flange 12 to spring over the catches 8. . When the two parts are connected in this way they are effectively secured together. The corners of the rear 60 member can be stiffened by the addition of corner pieces 13 of cast iron secured therein in any suitable way.

I have shown the invention as utilized in the construction of a door hinged at 14 and 65 provided with a knob 15 for operating it but the invention is not limited to this use. It can, for example, be used in the construction of walls for safes or parts of furniture or wherever such a structure would be use- 70 ful.

I do not limit myself to the particular embodiment of the invention herein shown and particularly set forth as the invention can be modified in the form of its details 75 without departing from the gist of the invention.
