Letters Patent No. 98,949, dated January 18, 1870.

IMPROVEMENT IN PUTTY-KNIFE.

Ths Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SelaW. Gerelds, of the city anil county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented certainnew and usefullmprovements in PuttyKnives ; and I~do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, by the letters of reference marked thereon, in which drawings—

Figure 1 shows a view of the knife open.

Figure 2 shows a section of the same.

The same letters denote the same parts in both.

A is the blade, of any of the usual forms in use.

B, the handle, with a screw at 0, forming the pivot on which the blade can be turned and shut into the handle.

D is a lever, with a teat at o, fitting into a hole in the blade A, and turning on a pivot or rest at «, and with a spring, as at E, to hold the teat into place.

The blades are made long enough to have a hole near the end, to receive tbePeat when shut, and also to extend beyond the handle and form a screw-driver, as shown at F.

The operation is simply to press on the lever at D', and it withdraws the teat, allowing the blade to be turned, and on removing the pressure, the spring forces the teat into the hole, and holds the blade open or shut, as the case may be, and by removing the screw 0, the blade may be removed, and another inserted.
