Letters Patent No. 97,865, dated December 14, 1869.

IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same , To all whom it may concern : '

Be it known that I, Edward Bourne, of the city of Pittsburg, in tlie county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Steam-Generators; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in forming a steam-generator, by. attaching to and beneath the steam-drum one or more short cylindrical boilers, each provided with a system of vertical flues, for the passage of the heat through and between the boilers.

To enable others to understand, make, and use my improved steam-generator, I will proceed to describe its construction, by reference to the annexed drawings, in which—

Figure 1 represents an elevation of the apparatus, as inclosed in a furnace.

Figure 2 represents a vertical section, and

Figure 3 a transverse section of the same. .

Figure 4 represents a section through one of the parts constructed with conical flues.

I construct my apparatus by first making a steamdrum or receiver, A, of any suitable shape and size.

Beneath this, and attached thereto by means of shbrt connecting-pipes B, are placed one or more shallow cylindrical or other shaped boilers, 0, each provided with a number of vertical flues, I), so arranged as that the space between the flues, in the upper boiler, will be directly on a vertical line above the flues in the one beneath it, by which arrangement the flame and heated products of combustion will be made to ascend in a tortuous or spiral passage on their way to the chimney.

The connecting-pipes B are divided by a central vertical partition, e, so as to form, in fact, two pipes, one of which extends only from boiler to boiler, while the Other continues nearly to the bottom. By this construction of the connecting-pipes, the steam, as it is generated, ascends through the short pipes into the receiver. The supply of water passing downward, at the same time, through the long pipes, tends to keep up a continual and rapid circulation.

As this construction of the connecting-pipes, and the operation of the same, is fully set forth in an ap plication for a patent for steam-generators filed by me, the 22d day of March, 1869, and as said application was allowed, July 24,1869, no further description is herein deemed necessary.
