To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, Anthony Haag, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronx, in the county of New York and State 5 of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbing Apparatus for Concrete-Wall Molds; and I do declare the following- to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will 10 enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plumbing and adjusting apparatus for concrete wall molds.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus by means of which the molds or forms for concrete walls are adjusted and firmly held in position while being filled with concrete and which may be employed in 20 the construction of either hollow or solid walls.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and 25 arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the, accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the lower tier 30 of. forms showing the arrangement of my adjusting apparatus before the concrete is applied to the forms. Fig. 2, is a similar view after the concrete has been applied to the lower tier of forms and the upper tier of 25 forms arranged thereon to receive the second course of concrete. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of one of the plumbing standards. Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the form holding and separating bars for main40 taming the forms in place while being filled.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the plumbing and separating bar for the tiers of forms above the first tier. Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the metal ties for holding the sections of 45 the. wall together after being formed and which also serve to hold the lower end of the plumbing standard and to separate the same while in use. Fig. 7 is a plan view of one of the washers used in connection will) the tie. 50 Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one of the plates for holding the ends of the forms together.
. In the embodiment of the invention, I provide a suitable number of forms which are 55 preferably in the form of steel plates 1, of suitable size and thickness, which are arranged at suitable distances apart to form a Avail of the desired thickness. When a solid Avail is to be formed, I employ simply an inner and outer series of plates .1 and Avhen a 60 hollow Avail is to be formed, additional plates are used and are arranged a suitable distance apart between the outer plates to form a space of the desired Avidth betAveen the two sections of the Avail. 65
In forming the Avail, strips 2, of wood, of suitable size are laid along on top of the concrete footing or base 3, of the wall at the proper distance apart after which tie bars 4, hereinafter more particularly de- 70 scribeci, are laid upon the footing between the strips 2. The outer forms or plates of the lower tier are then set up on the concrete footing and tie bars and against the inner edges of the strips 2, as shoAvn. When a 75 hollow Avail is to be formed, inner plates or forms 1 are set up on the footing and tie bars at suitable distances apart and spaced from the. outer plates the required distances for forming the inner and outer sections of 80 the Avail.
The tie bars 4, are in the form of strips of metal of suitable width and thickness and of sufficient length to reach across the width of the wall to project beyond the outer sides 85 of the same. In the projecting ends of the bars 4, are formed square holes 5, in the outer edges of which are formed notches 5a, the purpose of Avhich will be hereinafter described. In the bars, at a suitable distance 90 from each side of the center thereof, are outAvardly projecting pairs of parallel ears or lugs 5b, Avhich are preferably formed by cutting semi-circular slits in the bars and bending the cut metal upAvardly, as clearly 95 shoAvn in Fig. 6, of the drawing. When the forms 1., are set up for use, the lower edges of the inner forms are engaged Avith and held in position by the parallel ears 5b, of the tie bars. 100
The outer plates or forms of one side of the mold are held or supported in an upright position by means of plumbing standards G, the lower ends of which are reduced and are engaged with the notches 5a, in one 105 end of the tie bars 4. The upper portions of the plate or form on the opposite side of the mold and the intermediate plates or forms are supported and held in spaced relation with each other by means of spacing 110 bars 7. The bars 7, are preferably Tshaped in cross section-and in the lower por2
972,618 tion of the same are formed a series of notches 8, which are engaged with the upper edges of the plates or forms 1, and thereby holding the same in adjusted positions. In 5 the opposite sides of one end of tire bar 7, is formed a series of notches 9, which are adapted to be engaged with the plumbing standards 6, adjacent to the upper edges of the plates, thereby holding the. plumbing 10 standards in close engagement with the adjacent form or plate 1. On the opposite ends of the spacing bar 7, are secured crossheads or bars 10, which project at right angles beyond the opposite sides of the bar 15 7, as shown. The inner edges of the crossheads or bars 10, engage the upper edges of the adjacent outer plates or forms of the mold, thus holding the latter in position and preventing the same from bulging out20 wardly when the concrete is rammed betweensaid plates and the opposing plates or forms of the molds. In addition to the separating bars arranged opposite each of the plumbing standards, I may also employ 25 any suitable number of intermediate spacing bars arranged in between the bars which engage the standards. The plates or forms are preferably secured together by small metal plates la having punched from and 30 formed thereon hooks lb which are engaged with suitable holes formed along the adjoining edges of the plates. The lower ends of the standards 6, when forming the first course of concrete, are preferably secured to 35 the wooden strips 2, by staples or other suitable fastening devices.
After the concrete has been applied to the lower forms of the molds and has sufficiently set or hardened, the inner forms or 40 plates and the spacing bars 7, between the standards 6, are removed. After these parts have been removed, the spacing bars, opposite each of the plumbing standards, are removed and in place thereof, are arranged 45 tie bars 4, constructed as hereinbefore described. In applying the tie bars, one of the apertured ends thereof is slipped over the upper end of the plumbing standard and said bar is then brought down onto the 50 upper edges of the outer plates or forms and onto the first course of concrete. After the bars have thus been brought down, the notch 5a of the hole 5, which is applied with the standard, is engaged with a notch 11, 55 formed in the outer edge of the standard, adjacent to the upper edge of the side plate or form, thus providing an interlocking connection between this end of the tie bar and the plumbing standard. After the tie bar 60 has thus been engaged with the standard, a flat washer 12, which is preferably of rectangular form, is slipped to the opposite end of the bar and is forced up into engagement with the outer side of the adjacent 65 outer form or plate 1, of the mold by a linch pin 1-3. said pin having a reduced lower end which is inserted in the notch 5a of the hole 5, at this end of the bar. When the tie bars have thus been arranged, the plates or forms 1, for the second course of concrete, 70 are set up on the tie bars. The outer plates or forms are in line with the outer plates of the lower course of concrete, while the inner plates or forms set into or between the ears 5b of the tie bars and the lower portions, of 75 the same are thereby held in proper position to form a space immediately above the space of the lower course. The outer side plates of the side of the mold, adjacent to the plumbing standards are held at their lower 80 edges by”the upper end of the vertical portion of said standards while the lower edges of the outer plates or forms of the opposite side of the mold are held in position by the washers 12, on the tie bars 4. 85
When the plates or forms of the second tier have been thus arranged, the upper portions thereof are adjusted and spaced the proper distance apart and plumbed perpendicular or held at any suitable angle by 90 plumbing and spacing or separating bars 14, which consist of flat strips in one edge of which are formed a series of notches 15, which correspond with the notches formed in the spacing bars 7. One end of the 9 a plumbing and spacing bars 14, is extended and projects a suitable distance beyond the side plate or form adjacent to the plumbing j standards and in said extended end is formed a slot 16, with which is engaged a 100 clamping bolt 17, inserted through a bolt hole 18, in the end of an angular or inclined । extension 19, formed on the upper end of the vertical portion of the plumbing standards 6, as shown. On the end of the bolt 105 17, is screwed a thumb nut 20, which is adapted to be screwed up into tight engagement with the extended end of the spacing : and plumbing bar 14, after tire latter has been adjusted to bring the plates or forms no of the mold in proper position. In addition to the spacing or plumbing bars 14, I may also, if necessary, employ any number of the spacing bars 7, in between the bars 14, to hold the upper edges of the second tier 115 ; of forms in position and prevent the bulging of the same while being filled with concrete. After the second course of concrete has thus been laid, the inner forms and the spacing bars are removed, as hereinbefore ΐdescribed, and the plumbing standards are also disengaged from the lower tie bars and are moved upwardly and have their reduced lower ends engaged with the notches and apertures in the projecting end of the next 125 row of tie bars, whereby said plumbing standards are supported and held in position in the same manner as described in connection with the forming of the first two courses of concrete. After the plumbing 130
072,618 standards have thus been moved upwardly, the outer forms or plates of the finished lower courses of the wall are removed and the projecting ends of the tie bars are cut off· By. successively repeating the operation hereinbefore described, walls of any desired height may be quickly and easily constructed.
It will be noted by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings that when the first course of the wall is constructed, the plates or forms 1 are braced and held in position by plumbing and separating bars 14, said bars beingswung downwardly on the bolt 17 until their opposite ends are in engagement with the spacing bars 7 to the ends of which the separating bars 14 are secured by wiring as shown or by any other suitable connection. This arrangement of the plumbing and separating bars 14 applies only to the first round or course of forms, said plumbing or separating bars being engaged with the upper edges of the forms or plates above the first round or course, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be. resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
