To dll whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Edward T. Covell, of the city of Brooklyn; State*of New York, haye invented a new and improved Attachment of Guards to Bails or Handles of Cans, Pails, and other vessels; and I do her eby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which—।

The nature of my invention consists in the attach-! ’inent' of suitable guard-pieces to metallic handies or bails, to perfect and complete the same;, by rneaiis of metallic clamps, as hereinafter fully described.

The customary mode, of attaching guards to handles or to bails has been to pass the wire of the bail through a .longitudinal perforation in a cylindrical guard-piece.

If the guard becomes brokbn, the handle or bail must be removed to replace it.

My invention admits of the ready attachment of a guard to the handle or bail, without removing the latter, and it is much cheaper in its manufacture and attachment than the old form.

The guard which I use is a semi-cylindrical or. rounded piece A, of any suitable material, by preference, however, of wood, having a flat lipper surface bevelled at its ends, as shown in fig. 1,.to fit the straight or flattened portion of the handle or bail B, and notched, as illustrated in fig. 2, to receive and embrace tlie same, and thus be prevented from turning thereon.

This guard-piece A, so fashioned, is securely held in place upon the under sidebf the metallic handle or bail B, by means of a clamp 0, of metal, so bent as to partially embrace the metal of the handle or bail B, extending over the upper surface of the guard A, (see fig; 4,) and, curving· over its edges closely, pass down far enough on each side thereof’ to embrace and uphold the same, as illustrated in fig. 5.

A slipping of the guard A. in its clamp-plate C is prevented, either by means of small tacks or by in-, dentations of the plate G into the guard-piece, 'as ; _;sliown in fig. 4, or else by cutting a recess in; the» 'guard-piece,· as shown in fig. 7, to receive tlie .clampplate. ’ ..... ..

The hold of the clamp-plate upon the guard-piece may be made yet more secure by· cutting grooves dd, fig. 7, in the sides of the guard-piece A, to receive the edges of the clamp 0, which are in such case pressed down into the same. (Sge fig, 6.)

Instead of using simply a seiiii-eylindrical guardpiece, A, as just described, I contemplate securing a .complete double-oval cylindrical guard upon the,metallic.handle or _bail B, by mqans of outer clamp-plates pi· clasps.

In this case the oval or cylindrical guard E, fig. 8, is divided longitudinally, and the two halves are secured by means of outer clamp-plates//, bent to’’conform thereto, and whose edges pass into grooves cut into the sides of each division, as illustrated in flg. 8.
