SPRING-MATTRESS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Samuel P. Etter, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cisne, in the county of Wayne and State of 5 Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to . spring mattresses and one object of the invention is to pro10 vide an economical, light and durable articlein which the qualities of a spring and a mattress shall be combined so that the device when placed in position upon a bed will afford a support for the body of the occurs pant without the use of additional supporting means.

A further object of the invention is to combine wire springs of suitable construction with a mattress body formed of felt, 20 said wire springs being embedded in the felt structure of the mattress.

Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction arid operation of this class of devices.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts 30 which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing hereto annexed has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however, understood 35 that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of a spring mattress constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion of the felted covering material having been broken away to expose the spring. Fig. 2 is a sec45 tional view On a larger scale of a portion of the spring mattress.

Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

In the construction of the improved 50 spring mattress a frame A is provided, said, frame being preferably of rectangular shape and made with rounded corners 5. The frame may be made of a solid metallic rod or of tubing of suitable dimensions. The 55 frame A supports the spring body B which may be constructed in any suitable manner of woven wire; in the example illustrated in the drawing of the spring body is formed of crimped wires 6, suitably interwoven to form meshes of any desired dimensions and 60 having their terminal ends suitably attached to the side and end members of the frame A.

The mattress body C is formed of· layers of felt completely surrounding the spring, frame A .which latter is completely, em- 65 bedded, between the layers of felt, the component material of which is agglutinated between the meshes of the wire fabric so as to forin practically a single thickness of felt. The mattress may be of any desired 70 thickness but it is estimated that a thickness . of two inches will be sufficient for all practical purposes. The manner of supplying the felt cover to the spring framq may be varied; the hair, wool'.or other material or 75 , materials of which the felt is composed may ‘be applied directly to the sides of the frame and subjected to the ordinary well known fulling process,, or sheets of felt may be applied to the sides of the frame and sub- 80 jected to a subsequent fulling-process where- by the material will become agglutinated between the meshes of the wire.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto an- 85 nexed the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. A spring mattress constructed, according to this invention will be light in weight and it may therefore be easily turned and handled 90 by a person of the weaker sex; it is clean and-sanitary as well as thoroughly comfortable in use; and by the. use-of the improved spring mattress independent supporting springs may be entirely dispensed with 95 thereby effecting a saving of no small importance. .
