Handle for trunks.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Charles F. Knapp, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clintonville, in the county of Waupaca and 5 State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has for its object 10 to provide a new and improved handle for trunks, valises, telescopes, etc., and is especially adapted for traveling men’s heavy trunks.

It has heretofore been common to make 15 handles for trunks of heavy leather straps, which are liable to become broken in the rough handling to which the trunks are usually subjected thus necessitating the same to be made of the best quality of leather thus 20 increasing the cost and making the same expensive.

The object of my invention is to form a handle which can be macle of most any kind of cheap material and can be made at much 25 less cost than when macle of high priced leather, while at the same time the strength and utility of the handle is increased.

With these objects in view the invention consists of the details of construction and 30 arrangement which will more fully appear hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, Figure 1, is an elevation of a trunk handle with parts 35 broken away showing the construction. Fig. 2, is a cross section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3. represents the metal cable.

Like numerals and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several 40 views.

My improved handle is advantageously made of leather in three layers sewed together, the front and rear strips, 1 and 2, respectively, being identical in construction 45 and each being provided with slots a, a, through which pass nails, rivets, or bolts or similar devices in the present instance bolts, as shown at 3. The central or middle layer 4, consists of leather or similar material of the proper size and shape, i. e. of 50 the same shape and size of the front and rear layers, 1 and 2, with the difference of having one long longitudinal slot 5, within which is inserted an endless metal cable 6, through which pass the bolts 3 and which 55 gives the desired strength to the handles.

To protect each end of the handle and to prevent the screw-head of bolt 3 from wearing through the openings or slots a, a, I apply a guard C of metal which covers prac- eo tically the projecting portions of the handle and the ends of the guards pass around to the sides of the handle and clip the same and so as to form an opening through which the end portion of the handle slides freely so ¢5 that the handle may lie flat against the trunk or be bowed out to facilitate the grasping and handling of the trunk handle.

The handle is connected to the trunk, in the present instance, by means of the bolts 70 3, having nuts f on inside of trunk.
