Letters Patent No. 93,473, dated August 10, 1869.

IMPROVEMENT IN PIANO-FORTES.'

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it mag concern: '

Be it known that I, Charles A. Peterson, of the city of-New York,'in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Piano-Forte; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, dear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which my invention relates to piano-fortes; and

It consists in an improved construction and arrangement of the agraffes, and a novel substitution for the ordinary bridge, as will be hereinafter set forth.

In place of the ordinary bridge, I use a single plate, or a series of plates, 11, having two agraffes, J, and a block, K, for each chord, each block EL being between a pair of agraffes, as shown.

These plates I are.fastened, to the sounding-board by means of bolts or screws, c, or in other suitable manner.

By this arrangement the bridge, so to say; can be shifted, to lengthen or shorten the vibrating portion of each chord, in order to produce the requisite sound.

Better harmony and clearness of sound can thus be obtained. By having both ends of the vibrating portion of each chord supported in equal manner, the chords will not be apt to wear more at one end, and the strain will be equalized. Furthermore, if any onepart of the apparatus should get out of order, it can be repaired without disturbing the other parts. The sounding-board will be less obstructed, and will be ahle to vibrate more freely.
