To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Edwin A. Morrill, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gettysburg, in the county of Potter and State 5 of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in fence posts and the like. :

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily set up in hard ground and which will be 15 strong and durable.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully de20 scribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which—

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved post; Fig. 2 is an end view;. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the post in position 25 in the ground; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the base cap; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the point.

In the drawings 1 denotes the body of the fence post which is preferably made of wood 30 and of substantially cylindrical or. other shape. Its lower end is set in a metallic base cap 2 and is provided with a metal driving point 3. ’ The cap 2 has a circular bottom 4 formed with a centrally arranged opening 35 and surrounding its edge is a deep upstanding flange 5 which is set in the body 1 flush with the outer surface of the same. The bottom of the cap is adapted to rest upon the surface of the ground and the flange 5 is 40 made comparatively high so as to effectively protect the post from the moisture of the ground. The point 3 is cylindrical and has its lower end 6 beveled in opposite directions so that it will easily enter the ground and its upper end screw threaded and passed. 45 through the central opening in the bottom of the cap 2 and screwed into the lower end of the post body 1. At this screw threaded upper end 7 of the point is arranged a clamping nut 8 which is screwed against the bot- 50 tom 4 of the base cap and serves to effectively lock the point in the body.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the post is of such construction that it may be easily driven into the hardest ground and 55 that when set up it will maintain its upright position and will be exceedingly durable. The provision of the base cap with its deep flange 5 which is set in the lower end of the post body serves to effectively protect the 60 wood of the latter from moisture and hence
