Letters Patent No. 90,802, dated June 1,1869.

IMPROVED IMPRESSION DENTAT. CUP.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent, and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, C. L. Wuestenberg, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in that class of dental instruments known as an Impression-Cup, which cup consists of a peculiar-shaped receptacle for holding the wax or plaster used for taking an impression or cast of the'gums, palate, &amp;c.

Heretofore these cups have been made of metal or porcelain, and while answering the purpose for which they are intended, still they are objectionable, from the fact that where they are made of metal, the plaster adheres so firmly to the cup, after the impression has been taken, that it becomes very difficult to release the cast without great danger of its breaking. The metal of the cup also imparts to some persons a very peculiar and disagreeable taste, which seems to be'an objection to its use.

The porcelain cup, although being perfectly tasteless, is of such a friable nature, and the plaster adheres to it so firmly, that there is always danger of cracking the cup in getting it out.

My invention consists in making impression-cups of vulcanized gutta-percha, or vulcanized India rubber, and of the shape shown in the accompanying drawings, in which—

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an impression-cup for taking casts of the upper jaw.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of a cup for taking an impression of the lower jaw.

I make these cups of soft or pjastie gutta-percha, moulded to the required shape, and hardened by the process known as vulcanizing.

I then give the outside, A, of each cup a very high polish, so that when brought in contact with the mouth, no unpleasant sensations are produced.

The inside, B, of these cups I make or leave rough, or without any polish whatever. This I do for the purpose of causing the substance used in taking an impression to adhere with sufficient firmness during the operation of making the cast.
