Managing a network of computer systems using a version identifier generated based on software packages installed on the computing systems

Summary by NHIP

Software Version Identifier Management

The method generates a single version identifier for each computing system based on installed software packages and specific data. A processor orders this data before applying a hash function and concentrating the hashed data to create the identifier for comparison.

Abstract

An administrator system can generate a version identifier for a computing system based on the software packages installed on a computing system. The version identifier can represent the software packages installed on the computing system. The administrator system can utilize the version identifier to manage a network of computing systems. The administrator system can compare the version identifiers of the computing system to verify that the computing system have the same software packages installed. Likewise, the administrator system can compare the version identifiers of the computing system to a test version identifier.

A method, comprising:for each computing system of a plurality of computing systems: identifying, by a processor, a plurality of software packages installed on the computing system and data specific to the plurality of software packages;generating, by the processor, a version identifier for the computing system based on the plurality of software packages and the data specific to the plurality of software packages, wherein the version identifier is a single version identifier representing the plurality of software packages installed on the computing system;comparing, by the processor, the plurality of version identifiers for the plurality of computing systems to identify a first computing system with a plurality of software packages that differ from a plurality of software packages installed on a second computing system;and instructing, by the processor, the first computing system to alter the plurality of software packages installed on the first computing system.
