Handle for mattresses.

Be it known that I, Carlisle B. Holding, a.citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State 5 of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Handle for Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 10 it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates particularly to handles for use on mattresses or the like, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap and efficient article of the kind, which is adapted to be easily and quickly attached to 20 or disengaged from a mattress, and when attached to facilitate the lifting thereof.

The invention is fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,—

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a mattress with the handle comprising my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle removed from the mattress, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of one 30 of the securing pins, with its bifurcated end partly spread.

Referring to the drawings, 1 1 designate straps of leather, sheet-metal or other suitable flexible material which are of greater 35 length than the thickness of a mattress 2 to which they are adapted to be attached to enable their ends to overlap the opposite surface edges thereof as shown in Fig. 1. These straps are connected intermediate their ends 40 by a third strap member 3, which serves as a hand-hold, and is riveted or otherwise suitably attached thereto, as at 4. The ends of the straps 1 1 are provided with slots or apertures 5 for the reception of retaining pins 6.

These pins are of sufficient length to pass entirely through a mattress so as to engage both ends of a strap, and have their pointed ends bifurcated, as at 7, to adapt them to be spread apart, to prevent a withdrawal there50 of. It is thus apparent that my handle may be easily and quickly attached to a mattress by simply folding the ends of the straps 1 1 over the contiguous opposite side edges thereof, inserting the two pins 6 through the alin55 ing apertures 5 of the strap ends and the mattress, and clenching the forked ends of the pins against the contiguous strap ends and mattress side, or which may be as easily detached from a mattress.
