Be it known that I, William S. Aungst, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useδ ful Improvements in Telephone-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make ami 10 use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in desk attachments for supporting portable telephones, the object being to provide a support capable of being elevated or lowered, 15 moved toward or away from the supporting standard, or turned to the side, thus enabling the telephone transmitter to be moved to and positively held in any position within the range of various adjustments of 20 the holder.

My invention consists in the 'parts and combinations of parts as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims. . In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 25 is a view in elevation of my improvement, the. sections of the bracket being shown . closed up in full lines and distended in dotted lines. The. standard 1 may be angular or cylin40 drical in shape and of a length sufficient to permit of all reasonable and necessary vertical movement of the bracket carrying the-telephone transmitter. As the opening through the section 6 is but < 55 slightly greater than the diameter of the 1 standard, it will be seen that the weight of i the bracket falls on the rear upper edge and the front lower edge of the wall of the opening 7, which edges biting against the standard, act as a damp and sustain the bracket 60 in position against accidental displacement. The greater the weight on the bracket, the greater the clamping action, hence in order to adjust the bracket vertically it is simply necessary to grasp the bracket and lift same 65 sufficiently to t ake the weight off the clamping edges of the wall of the opening through section 6 of the bracket, which leaves the j latter free to be elevated or lowered, and when the bracket is released its clampin^0, 70 edges will hold it in the position to which it has been adjusted.

In the present instance I have shown the i ear end of the section 6 closed bv a solid block the latter having the opening 7 for the 75 standard 1, but it is evident that the opening may be directly through the tube constituting section 6 of the bracket. This bracket is made up of a series of telescopic sections 6, 8, 9 and 9^a made of metal, the sections 6,8 and 9 80 being tubes and the other either of tubing or solid metal. Each section 8 and 9 is provided with a longitudinal groove 10 closed at its inner end, and engaged bv stops 11 carried respectively by the sections 6 and 8, the stop 35 11 in sect ion 6 engaging the groove in section 8 and the stop 11 carried by section 8 engaging the groove in section 9. ‘ These stops'and grooves prevent any rotary movements of the sections and limit their outward move- 90 ments. The outer section 9^a of this extensible bracket is slotted to receive a pin carried by section 9 and is bent downwardly, rearwardly and outwardly forming the foot 12 on which the telephone transmitter rests. Se- 95 cured to the foot 12 is the Y-shaped clamp, having two toes 13 adapted to overlap or engage tlie base of the. transmitter at two points; the latter being engaged at a third point by the rearwardly bent portion of the. 100 section 9 of the bracket. The. stem 14 of the clamp is provided with an elongated slot hav- ing its upper walls beveled to receive the beveled head 15 at one end of a screw 16 passin °· through the foot 12. A wing-nut 17 is 105 screwed on the lower end of the screw 16 and engages the under face of the foot 12. Bv this arrangement the. clamping toes 13 may be adjusted to suit bases of different sizes and clamp them securely to the bracket. With a 110 bracket thus constructed a telephone transmitter may be supported at any convenient

height to suit the user, and the bracket maybe manipulated to carry the transmitter out of the way, or bring it into any position most convenient for the user.

While I have described the improvement as a support for a telephone, it is clearly evident that the bracket may support a tray or tool rack or an electric lamp, and when the standard 1 is made cylindrical in cross-sec10 tion, as shown in Fig. 1, the bracket can be rotated or turned thereon so as to carry the telephone, tray, etc., out of the way.
