'Be it known that I, Felix Niemeier, government architect, subject of the German Emperor, residing at 21Moltkestrasse,Brom5 berg, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inlet-Boxes or Gullies for Drain-Pipes dr the Like, of which the fol-^{S a}« .1, clear, and exact description. ¹⁰ , This invention relates to an improved inlet box for tubular conduits which are employed to form a continuation of open water channels,

It is designed chiefly for use in agricultural 15 improvement works where in regulating minor water channels and in the irrigation and drainage of meadowland and marshes, and especially in drainage installations, underground pipes are frequently substituted for 20 open ditches, as this obviates obstacles in the cultivation of the soil and involves very little expense for maintenance. Such a pipe channel requires to be secured with great care against obstruction by materials carried into 25 the pipe, and the inlet box forming the subject of the present invention is intended to serve this end. Such water inlets may also be employed in the drainage of railway works and road embankments.

The inlet box is made of cement concrete with wire insertions. On the front side it is semicircular in plan, in order to insure.over the largest possible section a flow of water 40 directed towards the center of the pipe conduit, from the ditch or reservoir a which drams into the conduit. At the top the box is partly closed by means of a roof or cover, the opening remaining, is intended to let in the 45 water when the water level is very high To prevent weeds and other objects carried away by the water, from entering into the box the upper orifice is covered with an iron grating c.

Slots d are arranged in the front face, through which the water is intended to enter 50 when, at a medium or low level.. The lower margin of the slots is situated on a level with the base of the pipe conduit to be protected by the inlet box, so . that the water can be drained off down to the level of the bottom of 55 the conduit and no loss of head will thus arise through the interposition of the box. The bottom e of the box is recessed in the form of a mud trap, so that any sand and mud may be deposited there. To facilitate the peri- 60 odical removal of these deposits the grating _con the top of the box can be turned back on hinges/on the upper side of the box.
