Letters Patent No. 87,570, dated March 9,1869.

IMPROVED COFFIN-BIER, i

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern :

Be it known that I, Patrick Joyce, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in CoffinBiers ; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, mailing a part of this specification, in which—

My invention consists—

First, in providing a coffin-bier, of the kind now generally in use, with a revolving platform, upon which the coffin rests, so that, when it is necessary to change the position of the coffin, it may be done while the coffin is on the bier, and without the usual inconvenience of lifting and carrying the coffin or bier.

Second, in providing suitable means for elevating the platform upon which the coffin rests, so as to adapt it to the heights of pews in different .churches, and to other requirements.

In the accompanying drawings—

A is the coffin-bier, of the general form and size of the common bier now in use.

B is the platform, upon which the coffin rests, and which is provided with a pivot or screw, B¹, on the under side, operating within a nut or box, B², fixed in the central cross-board C of the bier.

. D D are movable screws, working vertically within nuts in the end cross-boards O' O' of the bier.

The said screws are for the purpose of raising the platform to the desired height, when a central pivot,

B¹, is used, instead of a screw, and are provided with suitable heads &lt;7 d, by which they are moved, and may or may not, as desired, have caps, d'd', on their upper ends, to press against the under side of the platform to preserve it from wear, and make a firmer support’ When a screw, B¹, instead of a pivot, is used, the movable screws D D are not required, as hinged blocks E, or equivalents, will answer equally well for supporting the ends of the platform, while the platform may be raised by screw B‘.

F are friction-rollers, journalled at each end of the platform, and extending through slots a little above its nice, so that the coffin may be easily rolled thereon These may be used or not, as required.

G are pins, placed in holes at the ends and sides of the platform, for securing the coffin in place when the bier is carried.
