Reinforced concrete construction.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Charles P. Walter, a citizen of the United States; residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and useful Reinforced Concrete Construction, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to reinforced concrete structures such as street curbs and the io like and its-object is to provide one or more reinforces constituting' a fixed part of the structure and which are so shaped as to resist the effects of climatic changes and reduce them to the minimum.

A still further obj ect is to provide reinforc- ing devices located at points within the structure where the greatest wear occurs, said devices being fixedly secured so as to prevent their separation from the structures.

Referring to. the figures by characters of reference, 1 is a solid metallic strip triangular 40 in cross section' and which is fitted along one edge of a cement body 2, said strip being held in position by anchors in the form of wires 3 riveted or otherwise secured within the strip 1 and having their embedded ends hooked or 45 curled as shown at 4. It will be noted that one of the outer faces of the strip 1 is smaller than the other outer face. This is designed to meet various conditions in the manufacture of reinforced concrete structures, it being the 50 intention to use strips of the same proportions in various forms of structures of this character. Where the reinforcing strip is used with a concrete curb it is placed at the junction of the two exposed faces of the curb 55 so that wheels, etc., will contact solely with the metallic reinforce.

. Instead of using a single strip for reinforcing purposes as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two strips may be employed as shown in Fig. 3, one strip being disposed along each edge of 60 the front face of the curb. Each, strip' of course has separate anchoring means. As an additional means of reinforcing the curb 8, third 'strip may be interposed between the edge strips as indicated at 5 in Fig. 4, in 65 which event bowed anchoring wires 5^a are threaded through the inner portion of the strip 5 and placed in engagement with the anchors. 3 prior to molding the body 2 of the curb. If will of course be understood that 70 other forms of anchors .may be employed, such as a continuons wire 6 threaded through the reinforcing strip, -as ffiown in Fig. 5, so as to form anchoring loops.

Still another form of anchoring device is 75 shown in Fig. 6 wherein a substantially Vshaped anchor 7 having hooked, ends 8 is shown embedded within the body 2 and held upon-the trip 1 by means of a nail 9 which is inserted' through an opening in said strip, its 80 head engaging the apex of the anchor. The body of the structure will of course hold the parts assembled.

Considerable importance is attached to . the fact that the reinforcing strip is triangu- 85 lar in cross section and solid as it has been found by actiial tests that curved or angular . reinforces will not resist- the action of heat and cold sufficiently to render them serviceable. ' go

The preferred form of the invention has been set forth in the foregoing description but I do not limit myself thereto as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or 95 sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the’right to make, such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the claims.
