Operating methods for voice activity detection/silence suppression system

Summary by NHIP

Voice Activity Detection Control

The method controls a communication channel by detecting voice and noise energy levels over a 100 msec duration. Silence suppression activates only when noise energy remains constant based on a flat power frequency spectrum and voice energy is absent.

Abstract

A Voice Activity Detection/Silence Suppression (VAD/SS) system is connected to a channel of a transmission pipe. The channel provides a pathway for the transmission of energy. A method for operating a VAD/SS system includes detecting the energy on the channel, and activating or suppressing activation of the VAD/SS system depending upon the nature of the energy detected on the channel.

A computer-readable storage device comprising instructions that, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising:determining whether there is an absence of voice energy associated with a communication channel during a predetermined period of time;determining whether noise energy associated with the communication channel is constant during the predetermined period of time based on a spectrum constancy criterion;and activating silence suppression in response to determining that the noise energy associated with the communication channel is constant during the predetermined period of time based on the spectrum constancy criterion and that the voice energy associated with the communication channel is absent during the predetermined period of time, the activating of silence suppression comprising associating voice energy with the communication channel that was not already associated with the communication channel prior to activating silence suppression.

An apparatus to control a communication channel, the apparatus comprising:a processing device;and a computer-readable storage device to store instructions that, when executed by the processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising: determining whether there is an absence of voice energy associated with the communication channel during a predetermined period of time;determining whether noise energy associated with the communication channel is constant during the predetermined period of time based on a spectrum constancy criterion;and activating silence suppression in response to determining that the noise energy associated with the communication channel is constant during the predetermined period of time based on the spectrum constancy criterion and that the voice energy associated with the communication channel is absent during the predetermined period of time, the activating of silence suppression comprising associating voice energy with the communication channel that was not already associated with the communication channel prior to activating silence suppression.
